Another Man's War: The Story of a Burma Boy in Britain's Forgotten African Army, by Barnaby Phillips

At age 16 Isaac Fadoyebo ran away from his West African village to join the British Army. The Second World War was raging, and Nigeria's colonial masters were desperate to find men to defend India and the Empire. He was taking breakfast deep in the Burmese jungle when the Japanese ambushed his unit and left him for dead. With the help of a Muslim family he survived, but in every other way Isaac was forgotten, all the more so as Nigeria struggled to come to terms with its newfound independence. Yet Isaac could not forget the debt he owed to the Burmese family, now trapped in a simmering sectarian conflict. In Another Man's War, veteran foreign correspondent Barnaby Phillips shares the gripping, unforgettable story of a Burma Boy in the Second World War and the legacy of colonial rule.

Review
'Barnaby Phillips has uncovered a tale which touches the world in every sense. The story is a deceptively simple one, of a lanky boy who runs away from his dusty Nigerian village to join the British Army and is left for dead thousands of miles from home in the Burmese jungle. The miraculous sheltering and survival of Isaac Fadoyebo not only make an irresistible human drama. They also illustrate the terrifying global swirl of the conflict. Told with warmth and colour, this account of a forgotten soldier in a forgotten army in a forgotten war will not itself be easily forgotten.' -- Ferdinand Mount, author of The New Few 'Dramatic, moving, often shocking, painstakingly researched and brilliantly told, Another Man's War is a story the world should hear, not just so that West Africans may know the part they played in the Burma campaign and in the Second World War, but so that Britain and the world knows it too.' -- Aminatta Forna, author of The Hired Man and The Memory of Love 'Another Man's War is a testament to the kindness of strangers and the power of memory. Meticulous research is matched by profound human emotion.' -- Lindsey Hilsum, International Editor, Channel 4 News 'A rich story, richly told. An inspiring instance of common human deceny, handled brilliantly by a writer whose research is as dogged as his touch is fine.' -- Tim Butcher, author of Blood River and Chasing the Devil 'The hard-won victories of the Second World War define British identity to an extraordinary degree. Phillips illuminates vividly, through a very human story, how that ostensible struggle between democracy and fascism was experienced and interpreted by a large majority of the world's population. Another Man's War admirably complicates and deepens our sense of history.' -- Pankaj Mishra, author of From the Ruins of Empire 'An enthralling human story of soldiers whose sacrifice has been too long neglected... This book deserves to become a classic of war history.' -- Fergal Keane, BBC Foreign Correspondent and author of Road of Bones 'Brimming with facts, anecdotes and pathos, this page-turner is a must-read for anyone interested in military history and Nigeria's transformation in the mid-twentieth century.' -- Noo Saro-Wiwa, author of Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria 'Two young West African soldiers shipped halfway across the world in 1943 to fight for the British in Burma find themselves abandoned - wounded, starving and sick - in the unmapped jungle of the Arakan. Their astonishing adventures are reconstructed here in gripping detail... A real-life thriller with sobering implications for the British reader - but I found it impossible to put down.' -- Hilary Spurling, author of Burying the Bones 'Excellent... such a gripping and valuable contribution to the literature... fascinating' African Arguments 'Impressive... Phillips is a confident narrator... a gripping military history which brings African witnesses to the dying days of the British Empire out of the shadows' TLS 'Remarkable...spellbinding' Mail on Sunday 'a heroic tale of survival' Cotswold Life

Prologue

2 March 1944
Burma

Isaac Fadoyebo would always remember the Kaladan as a wide and calm river, as silent as a graveyard. They had been drifting down it for four days. Trees lined the banks and monkeys played in the branches that reached above them. They were some ninety soldiers, British officers and their West African men, equipment heaped precariously high on the little fleet of bamboo rafts. Most of the West Africans could not swim. When Lance Corporal Felix Okoro had fallen in a couple of days previously, he had drowned. His body had washed up on the far bank the following morning, and by the time the burial party reached him, vultures had already started to tear away at the flesh. It had been a horrible accident, Isaac thought, although not one that had created a feeling of impending disaster. He had woken that morning with no sense of foreboding. He didn’t know that for the rest of his long life, he would always think in terms of before and after this day.

The officers and men were taking breakfast together around a campfire. A simple affair of bread and tea, washed down with plenty of sugar, but no milk. This would be their last day on the river. That afternoon they hoped to arrive at the town of Kyauktaw, which their colleagues in the 81st Division had captured only the week before. They were a medical unit, trying to keep up with the advance. At Kyauktaw, they’d been told, they would be setting up a small field hospital, because the Japanese were expected to put up more of a fight to the south. There would be casualties, and they would be responsible for them.

None of the men on the riverbank that morning could have been described as battle-hardened. The officers were doctors, almost all from Scotland. They were volunteers, and most had only signed up after war was declared. The West Africans were from Nigeria and Sierra Leone, and had joined the army in the last couple of years. They’d been trained in first aid and nursing, but given only the most rudimentary of fighting skills. The few that carried guns probably hoped they’d never have to use them. Their unit’s name precisely determined their role in the great British army’s attempt to recapture Burma: they were the 29th Casualty Clearing Station, and they belonged to the 6th West African Brigade, part of the 81st Division of the Royal West African Frontier Force.

It sounded grand, put like that, but the truth was that the 29th CCS was an odd assortment of men of variable quality. When they’d crossed the border from India, they’d heard artillery, and seen British planes strafing enemy positions on distant hills. On one occasion, they’d even treated some injured Japanese soldiers who had been captured by the front-line soldiers. But that was weeks ago now. There were some who’d begun to hope quietly that the Japanese had pulled out of the Kaladan Valley altogether.

The men dawdled. Most were wearing only vests and shorts. Many were barefoot. If they were going to spend another day back on the rafts, they asked, why bother to put boots on? Some ambled down to the water, to wash their faces. Others wandered off in the direction of the nearby village, a straggling line of bamboo and thatch huts along the riverbank. When they’d arrived the previous evening, they were relieved to see that it was an Indian settlement. Indians, that’s what they called the Muslims, because that’s what they looked like. They could be trusted; the officers had drummed this into the men before they’d set out, and it was turning out to be true. It was the others, the Arakanese Buddhists, or Burmese as they called them, who were slippery. Why, they even looked Japanese. The Africans asked the Muslims what name they gave to their village. ‘Mairong,’ they replied.

The commanding officer, Major Robert Murphy, looked at his watch. Half-past seven, time to load up the rafts. The mist over the river had burned away, revealing the outline of the trees on the far side. He wondered if he should tell the men to make less noise. He didn’t like this complacency. He looked down the sloping muddy bank, and saw Isaac sipping his tea and chatting to Company Sergeant Major Archibong Bassey Duke, a fellow Nigerian. There’s two young men who seemed to be enjoying this adventure, thought the Major.

That morning Bassey Duke was warming to one of his favourite themes: life after the war. When it was all over, he told Isaac, they’d return home with some money to spend, and some stories to tell. Bassey Duke was a giant of a man. He wore blue shorts and a white vest, and would have been easily visible from the far side of the river. It was the end of the dry season, so the opposite bank was only one hundred or so yards away. Behind it the sun was rising over the steep hills, the dark jungle still in shadow.

Bassey Duke jerked and spun, and only then did Isaac hear the shots. He watched his friend fall to the ground, still clutching his red enamel mug. Tea spilled from it and trickled down the bank. There were flashes of light in the jungle on the opposite side of the river. Bullets buzzed past Isaac’s head. Like angry wasps, he thought. He fell face down into the reeds. His heart thumped against the cold ground. They were in a terrible position, exposed on the steep, slippery bank. Machine-guns had opened up now. How many? One, at least, probably two. He caught a glimpse of Major Murphy stumbling past, walking like a drunk. That was strange. From higher up on the bank, he could hear screaming. Then he saw that Major Murphy’s head was covered in blood. The shooting stopped. Someone nearby was gasping in a quiet voice. ‘Take me, O God, take me, O God.’ It sounded like Private David Essien, but Isaac could not be sure. He tried to crawl towards the voice, but as soon as he moved the shooting resumed. More angry wasps spun through the air. The Japanese had Isaac in their sights, and bullets ripped through the reeds around him.

When the shooting stopped a second time, Isaac reached out with his left hand for Essien, who had stopped gasping. It was strange how still Essien was, how cold he felt, for Isaac could see no blood on his uniform. Isaac tried to crawl up the bank, but one of his legs did not seem to be working properly. He looked down and saw that his khaki trousers were soaked with blood. So was his shirt. He closed his eyes and said to himself, ‘Is this me? Is this really me, boy?’ He saw his father Joshua, sombre and pained, sitting on the veranda of the family house in the village, pleading with him to run away from the army before it was too late. Good advice, he thought now, but at the time he had shrugged his father away. ‘I am in trouble, I am in deep, deep trouble.’ His leg had started to ache, sending spasms right through his body. Tears rolled down his cheeks. Tears of fear or pain? He didn’t know. He was sure of only one thing: he was going to die.

Many hours must have passed, because the next thing he can remember is that the sun was low in the sky, and a kind white face was looking down at him. A miracle. It was Captain Brown, who seemed to be unhurt. He was smiling, and still trying to talk like one of the soldiers. ‘Ebo, my boy, you are down o!’ Ebo, the affectionate name the Captain always used for Isaac because, so he explained, Fadoyebo was too long to pronounce. The others must have all run away, but the Captain had stayed, or maybe even come back, to try to help the injured. As far as Isaac could see, Captain Brown did not even have a scratch on him. Isaac reached feebly out towards his officer. ‘I’m thirsty, so thirsty,’ he said.

The Captain went away, and Isaac could see he was fetching a flask of tea from one of the bamboo rafts that were still tied up on the riverbank. He came back and urged Isaac to sit up, take a sip. He was talking fast, telling Isaac that Major Murphy was badly hurt, he’d been shot in the head, and that he’d been dressing his wounds. It sounded like Captain Brown didn’t think Major Murphy would make it. Now he wanted to take a look at Isaac. He took a knife to Isaac’s trousers, and carefully cut them open, to reveal a bloody mess of a right leg. The Captain was saying something about bullets and a fractured femur, and how he was going to put together an improvised splint. Isaac struggled to raise his head to drink the tea, when he saw the Japanese soldiers running up the bank towards them, bayonets pointed at Captain Brown.

They had crossed the river.

The Captain turned around in surprise and jumped to his feet. He remonstrated with the Japanese. ‘I am Captain Richard Brown, a medical officer,’ he explained. He did not even reach for the pistol at his waist. The Japanese surrounded him, and lead him away. For some time after they’d disappeared from his view, Isaac could still hear the Captain, protesting.

Isaac watched other Japanese soldiers as they tore through the equipment on the rafts. One of them carried the flag of the rising sun. Then they turned to the dead bodies – there seemed to be two or three near Isaac – and took guns, ammunition, even clothes. They seemed desperate, taking whatever they could get their hands on. Only after they’d finished their plundering did they show any interest in him.

They spoke so quickly, he couldn’t understand. But they repeated a phrase again and again: ‘English people, English people,’ they seemed to be saying. Were they asking him whether they were any other officers? Did they want to know where the survivors were hiding? Now they were gesturing for him to stand up. One of them pointed a rifle at his head. They were saying something else, it must have been, ‘Get up, get up,’ but Isaac could not even sit. He wondered at the idiocy of it all. Did they think that if he could get up, he would still be lying here?

He knew what was coming. The Japanese, take a prisoner? A white man, like Captain Brown, perhaps, but a black man? No chance. That was not how they did things. He closed his eyes and waited to be shot.

For me it was magically refreshing to read the story of an African, a Nigerian soldier, in this war. The book had a special significance to me because my Grandfather was General C G (Kit) Woolner who commanded the 81st Division. As I child we'd beg him to take my sister and I for walks in the woods near Sissinghurst Castle in Kent and play at hiding from snd stalking Japs.

Important story that could be better told.
By History of ideas buff
The action scenes were compelling. The background socio cultural and military history of the conflict and it's impact-- while important to know-- we're told in a dry and rather tedious fashion, disconnected from the action.

A high school friend, Barnaby Philips, wrote this book and I was excited to read it long before it became available… it has proven to be even better than anticipated. Amazingly well researched and beautifully written, it is an enthralling historic novel that is one of the best books I have read for a while. And though I may be biased since I know Barnaby from school days, I have to HIGHLY recommend this book.

Review
"As with nearly every DK book I've ever read, this collection by Billy Wrecks and Danny Graydon (with a foreword by comics writing icon, Roger Stern) succeeds in being exhaustive yet condensed, providing the reader with access to just about everything that has touched Doctor StephenStrange's life since he became the Master of the Mystic Arts. Hardcoverwith gilt-edged pages (a nice touch!), this oversized book takes readers on an encyclopedic tour of Strange's origins, his allies, hisassociates, his enemies, and the notable turning points in his life.
"Each page is filled with artwork culled from the different decades of the publication of DOCTOR STRANGE. The clashing, divergent styles puttogether on the same page add to the notion that the world can be seenin differing ways through Strange's eyes, almost as if each era was awindow into a different dimension." -- RJ Carter

The saga of the Sorcerer Supreme...with one major flaw
By L. W. Swint
"I am known as Dr. Strange--Sorcerer Supreme of this material realm..."

'"Supreme"? Is then...no mortal magician stronger than you?"

"No..."

Doctor Strange and Lilia the Gypsy Queen.
Adapted from the story, "Portal to the Past," by Steve Englehart, Mike Friedrich, and Frank Brunner,
originally published in "Marvel Premiere" #12, 1973.

"The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a hardcover book offering an overview of the most unique Marvel Comics superhero, Doctor Steven Strange, "Master of the Mystic Arts!" It is the first time such a volume has been produced for the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and covers the length and breadth of his extraordinary exploits: from his early days as a former doctor of medicine, his spiritual resurrection as the prized pupil of the wise wizard revered as the Ancient One, to his contemporary status as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protector of the natural and the supernatural on our precious planet.

This lesser book of the Vishanti is divided into 7 chapters:

"Strange Magic:"
This introductory section of the book serves as an abridged biography of Steven Strange, providing brief glimpses into his amazing adventures as he came to become Earth's Mystic Master.

"Side by Side:"
At 44 pages, this is the longest chapter in the 176 paged book. While Doctor Strange's special title of Sorcerer Supreme causes him to be involved in magical missions only he can master, they bring him into contact not just with individuals of the supernatural worlds but also encounters with Earth's ever growing, ever evolving superhero community. Over time, the wizard of other realities came to build lasting relationships with many remarkable men and women. This chapter details the friends and allies Doctor Strange has gained in his career. They include: The Ancient One, the mystic mentor to Doctor Strange. Wong, the "manservant, confidant, and housekeeper" to the master mage's unique home, the Sanctum Sanctorum. Clea, Doctor Strange's great love, the beautiful sorceress from the Dark Dimension. Spider-man, an unlikely but recurring comrade in arms to the "Master of the Mystic Arts" in many an adventure. Doctor Doom, the grim and megalomanical monarch of the European nation Latveria, has been an occasional ally to Doctor Strange, although he is one not to be fully trusted. The Sorcerer Supreme has also allied himself with other super heroes. For example, he is the founder and leader of the team called "The Defenders," whose original members included the incredible Hulk and Namor the Submariner. The team would later include such characters as the cosmic spacefarer, the Silver Surfer; the Valkyrie, warrior woman of Asgard; Wolverine, the adamantium-boned mutant; and the martial arts master known as Iron Fist. Doctor Strange is also a member of the mysterious team called the "The Illuminati," which consists of Steven Strange; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four; Prince Namor; Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men: T'Challa, the Black Panther, King of the African land of Wakanda; Black Bolt, leader of the Inhumans; and Tony Stark alias Iron Man, the organizer of this secret society, formed to secretly protect the Earth. In recent years, Doctor Strange has also become a member of "The New Avengers," a branch of the original super team, "The Avengers." Among its diverse rank of heroes are: Spider-man; Wolverine; Ben Grimm, one quarter member of the Fantastic Four; Luke Cage the Power Man; Jessica Jones, Luke Cage's wife and a super powered private investigator; and Carol Danvers, the cosmic powered heroine known as Captain Marvel.

"Enemy Mine:"
This chapter delves into the mystical villains Doctor Strange has battled in defense of Earth. Some of his major foes include: Nightmare, shadowy lord of the realm of dreams; Baron Karl Mordo, disgraced ex-apprentice of the Ancient One, and archenemy of Doctor Strange; and the Dread Dormammu, demonic nemesis from the Dark Dimension. The "Master of the Mystic Arts" has also battled such malevolent enemies as Mephisto, Marvel Comics' crimson incarnation of "the Devil;" Umar the Unrelenting, the sinister sister of Dormammu; and Dracula, the bloodthirsty lord of vampires.

"The All Powerful:"
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange has encountered entities that exist on levels beyond the mortal concepts of good and evil. This chapter describes these awe-inspiring figures. There is Eternity, a being that encompasses the entirety of space and time, envisioned as the universe itself in human form. The Vishanti, a trinity of cosmic beings whose history form the foundation of the title and responsibility, Sorcerer Supreme. The Living Tribunal, the golden, three headed embodiment and guardian of cosmic balance in the myriad realms of the multiverse. These and other sentient cosmic forces have the power to affect the concept humanity calls reality on an inter-galactic and inter-dimensional scale, and part of Doctor Strange's immense task as Sorcerer Supreme is to represent and protect the humble world of Earth from entities whose vision transcends the boundaries of our universe.

"Mystic Realms:"
Doctor Strange's adventures have taken him far beyond the deep blue seas and vast continents of the Earth. His excursions have had the seer of the supernatural enter worlds that are not worlds and dimensions where dreams are made real. This chapter attempts to describe the almost indescribable, the planes of existence that the Sorcerer Supreme regularly explores as guardian of our cherished planetary home. Starting from his Sanctum Sanctorum, a New York victorian brownstone which is more than just a spacious home to the master of magic, Doctor Strange can enter such other dimensional realities as the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, a domain without form or structure; the ethereal realm of Eternity, which is just an aspect of the entity's totality; or the unworld of Ditkopolis, a dimension that pays artistic tribute to the co-creator of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko.

"Spellbound:"
This section of the book describes Doctor Strange's relationship with the power of magic, his bond with the mystical forces of the Earth and beyond, and his spiritual link to such magical entities as the Vishanti, as well as Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Raggador, and Watoomb. These cosmic connections form the basis of some of the spells the "Master of the Mystic Arts" invokes, like "the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak," the Roving Rings of Raggador," and the "Winds of Watoomb."

"Objects of Enchantment:"
The book's final chapter, these pages describe the invaluable mystical tomes and talismans Doctor Strange has that aid him in his charge as defender of Earth. It offers interesting background histories of these remarkable relics, which include: the Eye of Agamotto, the magical amulet that is the special ornament of Doctor Strange's mystical uniform; the scarlet Cloak of Levitation, which gives the Sorcerer Supreme the gift of flight; and the Book of the Vishanti, the great volume of magical knowledge, spells and incantations compiled by former masters of white magic.

As written by Billy Wrecks, Nick Jones, and Danny Graydon, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exploration of the "strange tales" of the great comic character that is Doctor Strange. It reveals many concepts and background facts that even this long time fan of the character did not know, like: Baron Mordo's middle name is 'Amadeus!' Or the distinctive round window designed atop Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum is called "The Window of Worlds," and "is decorated with a pattern of the Anomaly Rue, the Seal of the Vishanti." This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.

The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.

Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.

It comes recommended by this reviewer. Enjoy and may the Vishanti watch over you!

Wide variety of information. Good Book!
By Galactus
Usually get most things at Amazon, but got this at a local Comic Book Store. I really liked it. Has enough information to get you caught up before the movie and covers a lot of details I had no idea about and will keep you from having to read 200 comics to find out!

A Practitioner's Guide to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, by Raymond A. DiGiuseppe, Kristene A. Doyle, Windy Dryden, Wouter Backx

Extensively updated to include clinical findings over the last two decades, this third edition of A Practitioner's Guide to Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy reviews the philosophy, theory, and clinical practice of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). This model is based on the work of Albert Ellis, who had an enormous influence on the field of psychotherapy over his 50 years of practice and scholarly writing.

Designed for both therapists-in-training and seasoned professionals, this practical treatment manual and guide introduces the basic principles of rational-emotive behavior therapy, explains general therapeutic strategies, and offers many illustrative dialogues between therapist and patient. The volume breaks down each stage of therapy to present the exact procedures and skills therapists need, and numerous case studies illustrate how to use these skills. The authors describe both technical and specific strategic interventions, and they stress taking an integrative approach. The importance of building a therapeutic alliance and the use of cognitive, emotive, evocative, imaginal, and behavioral interventions serves as the unifying theme of the approach. Intervention models are presented for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, personality disorders, and addictions. Psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health counselors, psychotherapists, and students and trainees in these areas will find this book useful in learning to apply rational-emotive behavior therapy in practice.

Review

"Albert Ellis's legacy of his Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy has been left in good hands. With the third edition of this seminal work, Ellis's voice continues to educate, stimulate, and provide a core system for understanding and practicing REBT/CBT. Ray, Kristene, Windy, and Wouter continue to grow and develop the model for the next generation of clinicians to treat the next generations of patients." -- Arthur Freeman, EdD, ABPP, Executive Director, Clinical Psychology Programs, Midwestern University, Downers Grove, IL and Glendale, AZ

"This book is really a gem, putting rational-emotive and cognitive-behavior theory and therapy in the context of modern psychological sciences. It has all the ingredients needed for a reference book in the field: an updated and clearly presented theory and really excellent practical parts. It is a must-read for practitioners, researchers, and students in the fields of clinical psychology, counseling, and psychotherapy." -- Daniel David, PhD, Professor, Babes-Bolyai University; Adjunct Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and President, International Institute for the Advanced Study of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health

"The authors are among the world's leading researchers and practitioners of REBT. Their scholarship informs a clear, incisive description of the concepts underlying REBT and the empirical evidence bearing on these concepts. Of greatest importance for clinicians and trainees, they are able to translate these concepts into specific, practical recommendations for implementing the treatment. Their vast clinical experience and expertise shine through in the numerous clinical vignettes used to illustrate how to manage some of our thorniest therapeutic challenges." -- David Haaga, PhD, Professor of Psychology, American University

"This is an excellent update of a very important book. I would highly recommend it to therapists of any orientation and it is MUST for cognitive behavior therapists." -- Louis H. Primavera, PhD, Dean, School of Health Sciences, Touro College and University System

"With its step-by-step approach and many clinical examples, this excellent book
is extremely practical, providing clinicians with many therapeutic tools. It
should be in the libraries of practitioners interested in cognitive-behavioral
type therapies." -- Doody's

Great update for a therapy that actually works!
By Jorge Munoz-Bustamante, LCSW
The Practitioner's guide does a great job of bringing the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Psychology and Therapy (REBT) up to date. In a clear, thorough and concise manner the authors go over the principles of REBT, teach you the ABCs (bad pun)of this very effective yet simple therapy and provide extensive examples of REBT in practice. The Guide is a fairly long read but is easily understood and down-to-earth.

One of the fundamental aspects of REBT is it's teach-ability. Clients are encouraged to become familiar with it's principles and strategies in order to optimize their experience. In this, the Guide does not disappoint and I will be recommending it to some of my clients as well as to many of my colleagues. If they ever take this work and aim it at clients -A Client's Guide to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy- it will be a home run.

Summarily, this would be a great read for anyone with an interest in therapies that actually work, are cost effective, and can be self-taught to a significant degree.

Kudos to the authors!

For almost fifty years, Sources of Japanese Tradition has been the single most valuable collection of English-language readings on Japan. Unrivalled in its wide selection of source materials on history, society, politics, education, philosophy, and religion, the two-volume textbook is a crucial resource for students, scholars, and readers seeking an introduction to Japanese civilization.

Originally published in a single hardcover book, Volume 2 is now available as an abridged, two-part paperback. Part 1 covers the Tokugawa period to 1868, including texts that address the spread of neo-Confucianism and Buddhism and the initial encounters of Japan and the West. Part 2 begins with the Meiji period and ends at the new millennium, shedding light on such major movements as the Enlightenment, constitutionalism, nationalism, socialism, and feminism, and the impact of the postwar occupation. Commentary by major scholars and comprehensive bibliographies and indexes are included.

Together, these readings map out the development of modern Japanese civilization and illuminate the thought and teachings of its intellectual, political, and religious leaders.

Attempting to salvage an undeserved rating
By Nick Sommer
It's absurd that the only rating on the abridged version of Sources of Japanese Tradition would be a 2/5 stars. A note to the person who yielded such a ludicrous score: de Bary is an authority in Japanese culture studies, and given his credentials as an editor, the Sources series is wonderfully written. You are reviewing a historical survey and complaining that you were unable to retain the information on one page? Perhaps that's because you are delving into a field which requires at least some prior knowledge of terminology? Perhaps you should stick to the High School textbooks you seem to have a more enjoyable time reading? Either way, the review function serves so you can arbitrarily rate your experience-- if it is a negative one, you should back it up with more than "couldn't retain information; high school textbooks easier."

I have both of the unabridged copies from Sources, and they are both brimming with information cover to cover, if there is a problem with information retention then perhaps it is time to grab a pen and start taking notes.

Normally I love history and favor Asian history. This book however is a dreadful read and does not get to the point. You can read a few pages and not retain anything that has been written. I've read high school text books more interesting and informative than this.

Ms Peters is telling the story to her students by reading Lindsey's diary. Is it fair for a fifteen-year-old girl to kill herself? Was she exaggerating? Or did she live in a cruel world and all she needed was love? The most troubling question is . . . Where is Lindsey?

Amazon.com Review
Margulies's plays explore individuals' needs to be part of a group, usually a family, a religion, or both. Sometimes these are bitingly funny, as in the parodical Loman Family Picnic, about a young man who escapes his unhappy family life by imagining a musical of Death of a Salesman. Sometimes the plays are surreal, as in the Twilight Zonish What's Wrong With This Picture? about a dead wife and mother who is resurrected by her family's intense need--and then must convince them to let her rest in peace. The best in this collection is the title play. An artist finds himself in a crisis of identity when a German TV interviewer starts probing him about the supposed "Jewish" elements in his work. This volume, which also includes Found a Peanut and The Model Apartment, covers the upward curve of Margulies's career from the journeyman stage through off-Broadway successes to his first Broadway play.

About the Author
Donald Margulies's other plays include "Collected Stories", "The Loman Family Picnic", "Sight Unseen" and "Dinner with Friends", for which he was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Collection by one of America's best contemporary playwrights
By J. Gutteridge
Donald Margulies is one of the best playwrights currently at work in the American theater. His view of, particularly, middle class family life is elevated above the ordinary by Margulies' ability to observe his characters' struggles with the sharpest of eyes, while making his audience see and sympathize with the different points of view. His plays exploring the life of the artist also resonate. Margulies' earlier plays play with surrealism and comedy, while in the more recent plays he has used his knack for shuffling time and place to illuminate what appear to be ordinary lives. The Model Apartment is a remarkable play that dares to explore the fallout of the Holocaust through a lens of comedy, with powerful results. I look forward to a next volume of collected works of this extraordinary playwright.

This book is really good value for money
By Amazon Customer
This book is really good value for money. The pictures are very exquisite and intricately drawn as you will see in the pictures. They are beautiful to look at and I can't wait to color them in. It's a thick book with over 50 pictures to colour. Pictures range from animals, flowers and birds and much more. The pictures are on one side only so you won't ruin any picture on the reverse side, to be on the safe side it's recommended that you color with a piece of paper or card underneath so that's what I will do.
