Satanism: A Beginner's Guide to the Religious Worship of Satan and Demons Volume I: Philosophy, by Brother Nero

In this, the first book in a new series on Traditional Satanism, Brother Nero, an outspoken advocate of the Devil and His ways for over 20 years, focuses on an area of Satanism that few other authors have discussed in detail: the day to day philosophy and lifestyles of those who sincerely worship the Devil. Many topics usually considered too controversial for print in a book such as this are dealt with in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. Some of the many subjects covered in this book are: * Raising children in Satanism * Satanic marriage and sexual relationships * The nature of Satan and Demons * Holy Texts of Traditional Satanism * Al-Jilwah commentary * Daily prayer * Solitary practice vs. joining a Coven This book is a series of essays meant to educate those outside of Satanism about the true nature of the people who practice it, as well as to provide a source of inspiration and spiritual guidance to the Satanic community.

Brow-beating at its best!
By Myriad
I was highly anticipating the reading of this book by Brother Nero as a treat to the traditional standards and practices of Satanism. What I received was a lesson in brow beating. While Brother Nero is adamant that modern Satanists take Satanism so seriously as to form relationships with the Dark Father and his minions, he also pontificates that he is perpetually neglected, persecuted, other Satanists are lacking in true Satanic Faith, wishes to annihilate God via worship attrition, all Satanists are egotistical, wondering why all other people don't question themselves whether they are right or wrong yet in the same token believing all the while he is always right, "And I'm going to preach what I believe is the truth."

Reading between the lines however, some light does shine through on his particular brand of Satanism that stands out amongst other Satanic practices. While LaVeyan and Ford practices are symbolic and anthropocentric affording that no one bows before anyone or anything else in reverence, Brother Nero advocates the physical practice of worshiping Satan as the sole deity and seeing Him as the Greater power than our own which leads one to believe that Brother Nero advocates humility indicative of traditional Christian/Judaic/Islamic traditions. He believes that Satan and his demons are flesh and blood and should be respected as one would respect oneself and in doing, the same will be returned (The Law of Return -reciprocation-) indicative of the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you). His anthropomorphic views on Satan, the demons and yes even God -who is also egotistical and narcissistic- lead one to see into the mind of our Satanic Brother Nero.

All-in-all, only having read just a portion of Brother Nero's work, which is partly a lesson in humility in itself and an eye-opener to alternative possibilities on the worship of the Demonic forces that permeate our everyday lives, leaves me to believe that Brother Nero, while still immature in conversation and argument, has the greatest potential to become an astute strategist in arming his disciples with the mental fortitude and aptitude necessary to become great apostles of the adversary.

I look forward to finishing the reading of Satanism: A Beginner's Guide to the Religious Worship of Satan and Demons Volume 1: Philosophy and future works from Brother Nero as well.

Anything worth doing is worth perfecting.

very good for beginners
By jordan
I would like to say this is one of the few books that touches on traditional/theistic Satanism. Their are many books out their on modern Satanism, which makes it hard to find a book that is true in regards to devil worshipping. This book includes all of the basics that any beginner Satanist should know. It is well written.

I gave it 4 stars because:
Pros:
Contains no fluff or extras, you get what you buy
Touches on very important issues: such as sacrifice, prayer, family, and what a Satanist is
Contains commentary on the Al-Jilwah
Good arguments with no loopholes
Written to be easily understood by anyone

Cons:
Lacked a bit in the history of Satanism. Did not talk too much about the origins of Satan, other than from the bible. Should have mentioned some of the ancient religions such as the Sumerians, where IMO Satan originated
Did not talk too much about any of the Satanic holidays and did not go into too much detail of any pagan lore and its influences on Traditional Satanism
Did not cover much on Meditation and Magick

Overall a good read. For a beginner the Cons would not be too important, but someone more advanced may find this book a little too basic.

In closing- If your new to Satanism or interested this is a must buy. If your an experienced Satanist this book wouldn't be a bad purchase, but not required.

This and That
By Wicked
This book was ok, but I found it to have a lot of unrealistic expectations as far as how a Satanist should go about in society and within their daily lives. How this author lacks the open mind of the fact that every path is very unique, and to state in their written works that if one doesn't follow their certain "expectations" then they aren't a Satanist IMO is asinine. Other than that and a few other things this book would be helpful to a novice, but it wouldn't be one of my first choices for reference.

Her decision is simple and she arrives in Liberty, Montana to marry a man she's never seen, her only desire to be a pleasing wife.

Jake Bridger exceeds Catherine's expectations at first glance. He looks as if he stepped from the pages of the Western romances she knows she shouldn't read. But she's about to find out that the men of Liberty are not like other men. Here, a wife is expected to make all of herself available to her husband, even parts a good girl like Catherine never expected a man to plunder. It's not an easy adjustment, but Jake isn't a man to take "no" for an answer, and sets about training his new bride using techniques that soon have Catherine wantonly eager for his attentions.

But can Catherine live with her new husband's explicit requirements when it opposes everything she's known?

Publisher's Note: "Claiming Catherine" depicts women in situations of non-consent as well as strict explicit punishment in sexual situations. Do not purchase this book if these elements will offend you.

When she's not writing, Vanessa savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She considers herself to be remarkably normal, exceedingly introverted and fairly vanilla, which does not explain her steamy stories and her fascination with cowboys, preferably more than one at a time.

She lives in the Wild Wild West where there's an endless source of 'research' material.

One of my top 10 steamiest stories ever! Wait until you see what was expected of a wife in Liberty, Montana!
By Nameher Professional Reader
Catherine lived in St. Louis and was supposed to marry Mr Beecham, not that he was any kind of a catch, but it was so hot at church one day that Catherine unbuttoned her top button. That set him off and from that point she was accused of being a wanton. He retracted his offer of marriage and she had no other prospects or opportunities in St Louis, especially with her father's debt hanging over her head. Her only viable solution was to become a mail order bride. Not only did she agree to become a mail order bride but she was married by proxy to someone she had never laid eyes on. Full of fear, she traveled to Montana, all the way wondering what it would be like to actually be with a man.
Alert! This is not a book to read in a room full of people. I wouldn't read it in a restaurant or coffee shop because I'm sure that anyone watching would notice my flushed face or the fact that I wasn't exactly breathing regularly.
Catherine's new husband Jake Bridger was big and beautiful. How lucky for her that Mr. Beecham retracted the offer of marriage. Catherine was thrilled to be married to this big, handsome man. A virgin, she was quite nervous at the anticipation of bedroom activities and perhaps it's best that she didn't know in advance about the culture and expectations of a wife in Bridgewater...expectations like 'corking' to follow the wedding ceremony.
I would classify this as a bit of a Western Erotic Fantasy Romance and it was arousing indeed. Although her husband agreed to delay his consummation of the marriage he had many other sensual plans. The husband had the responsibility to train the wife to meet his needs and there are very specific expectations, strict rules in that regard. He in turn is responsible for meeting his wife's needs even those needs that are accelerated and enhanced by the use of an aphrodisiac discovered by the original settlers of Liberty, Montana. In addition to a new way of depicting the submissive and master relationship, there is casual voyeurism, sensual domination.
If you are looking for a western/historical story in a 21st century b/d relationship, look no further. This is my first book by this author but I can tell that this will be the beginning of a very beautiful author / reader relationship.

Kinda dumb woman marries despicable man
By K. Furdell
SPOILERS. This book needs a trigger warning for anyone who's been drugged and raped. I'm a big fan of Vanessa Vale's other series, like Bridgewater and Montana Flowers, but this book, and I assume the rest of the series, is beyond the pale. The men in the town use drugs and humiliation to control and rape their wives, repeatedly extolling how "docile" and "biddable" the drugs make their women. (Don't come at me with some lame argument about it not being rape. There's no consent here, just coercion and deception.) The men have few redeeming qualities. They are liars, manipulators, and rapists, and think nothing of subjecting their wives to serious discomfort and pain (and I'm not talking erotic pain) in order to bend them to their will. If Vanessa would like to turn this into a series in which the downtrodden wives rise up and take revenge on their cruel husbands, I'd be all over that.

let us not forget that women were viewed as property in those days and a man could do pretty much what he wanted
By Marybeth
OK, I’ve read a few of the other reviews for this story and I don’t disagree. But, if you view it in the context of being non-consensual, it is a very erotic book. Also, let us not forget that women were viewed as property in those days and a man could do pretty much what he wanted. I really liked this book. It was sexy and very well written. Catherine is a mail order bride and Jake is the man who ordered her. Lol The community that Catherine has moved to does things differently. They make their wives sexually submissive by giving them and aphrodisiac that makes them needy all the time. In this story, we learn how Catherine is trained by Jake to become a wife in this community. When you read this story, look at it in the eyes of someone from this time and suspend your disbelief and outrage. It is after all, a story. I give this story 4 stars.

From Publishers Weekly
This collection of 14 essays, generated by a 1990 conference on the Vietnam antiwar movement, analyzes movement strategies, the role of the military and women in resistance, and the movement in the schools. While the essays contain much useful information, including some new material based on oral histories, they lack the narrative drive of less academic histories. A few of the contributions stand out: historian Maurice Isserman, analyzing the triumph of militance over pacifism in Students for a Democratic Society, says that its rank and file was more diverse and less radical than the leadership; peace activist David McReynolds reflects on how more radical social critics shook pacifists' ``unexamined'' view of America; David Cortwright, a former soldier-activist, traces the socioeconomic profiles of GIs who practiced dissent and disobedience, noting that volunteers opposed the war more than draftees. Particularly stimulating is historian Kenneth J. Heineman's portrait of Kent State University, which, contrary to myth, had been a hotbed of activism. Small wrote Resort to Arms ; Hoover is a professor of history at the University of Toledo.

Review
`I regard this book as a gem that not only should be used as a text but should also be a reference in labs, both academic and industrial, around the world where optical techniques are used.' Robert Glosser, Professor of Physics at University of Texas, Dallas

`A thoroughly excellent textbook and I look forward to being able to recommend it to my students... conventional topics are presented in an unconventional way ... the author has thought long and hard as to how best teach a variety of topics. This will make it a unique and valuable addition to the books currently in use at universities.' Ifan Hughes, Department of Physics at University of Durham

About the Author
G.A. Brooker, University Lecturer in the Department of Physics, Oxford University; Fellow and Tutor of Wadham College, Oxford. Held a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University in the years 1964-67 working in the then-new field of laser physics, followed by a Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Physics, Oxford from 1967-69 working on measurements of electro-optic coefficients of transparent crystals and a Fellowship by Special Election at Wadham College, Oxford from 1969-70.

Intermediate text, very readable, conversational tone...
By Steven J. Wojtczuk
Born and Wolf is a classic, but tough sledding at times. If it is a common topic in optics, you probably will prefer reading about it here instead. This book has a nice conversational tone, gives insight, and is reasonably detailed (but not exhaustive). It includes a lot of practical advice in small-type paragraphs in margins throughout the book (for example, the chapter on thin films notes that the refractive index can often vary with deposition method, etc.).

extensive use of sidenotes
By W Boudville
To follow up on the other reviewer's remark about the conversational tone of this book - Yes. This is aided by the author's extensive use of sidenotes. Something that has largely fallen out of fashion in recent decades. The copious white space at the edges of the pages is put to good use. In smaller print, the author makes informal asides about the main narrative that at times enhances the understanding of the reader.

A good pedagogy that does not detract from your overall reading. But one that you might want to take advantage of.

Though having said that, if you are majoring in optics, you should still get a copy of Born and Wolf, Principles of Optics: Electromagnetic Theory of Propagation, Interference and Diffraction of Light, or Hecht and Zajac, Optics (4th Edition), for a more extensive and definitive text.

Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R, Second Edition (Chapman & Hall/CRC Applied Environmental Statistics), by Song S. Qian

Emphasizing the inductive nature of statistical thinking, Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R, Second Edition, connects applied statistics to the environmental and ecological fields. Using examples from published works in the ecological and environmental literature, the book explains the approach to solving a statistical problem, covering model specification, parameter estimation, and model evaluation. It includes many examples to illustrate the statistical methods and presents R code for their implementation. The emphasis is on model interpretation and assessment, and using several core examples throughout the book, the author illustrates the iterative nature of statistical inference.

The book starts with a description of commonly used statistical assumptions and exploratory data analysis tools for the verification of these assumptions. It then focuses on the process of building suitable statistical models, including linear and nonlinear models, classification and regression trees, generalized linear models, and multilevel models. It also discusses the use of simulation for model checking, and provides tools for a critical assessment of the developed models. The second edition also includes a complete critique of a threshold model.

Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R, Second Edition focuses on statistical modeling and data analysis for environmental and ecological problems. By guiding readers through the process of scientific problem solving and statistical model development, it eases the transition from scientific hypothesis to statistical model.

Review

"‘Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R, Second Edition’ offers a comprehensive and highly engaging look at modern statistical modeling. It covers a wide range of topics, including linear and non-linear regression models, classification and regression tree structures, and generalized linear models. I particularly enjoyed the third section of the book covering interesting areas of advanced statistical modeling, where the reader can find many didactical examples that are highly relevant to environmental management such as the problem of Cryptosporidium in drinking water, the uncertainty in water quality measurements using the ELISA method as an example, or the threshold indicator taxa analysis.
The author has the unique ability of being able to clearly explain difficult statistical concepts whilst still making the book accessible for researchers of all levels, from undergraduate students to researchers already conducting serious empirical research. The emerging philosophical consensus that both the frequentist and Bayesian way of thinking are important in statistical practice is nicely articulated throughout the book. R codes are also provided, enabling researchers to apply statistical techniques to their own ecological or environmental management problems. Overall, this book is exceptionally well written and should prove an invaluable tool either as a classroom text or as an addition to the research bookshelf. I am very confident that ‘Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R, Second Edition’ will end up being a classic!"
―George Arhonditsis, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences, University of Toronto

"Shortly after it was published, the first edition of ‘Environmental and Ecological Statistics with R’ by Song S. Qian became a go-to book for environmental scientists interested in the application of Bayesian methods in R to address a broad range of environmental issues. The book serves to introduce Bayesian statistical analysis in an accessible way to ecologists and environmental scientists, with numerous applications in R. An important aspect of this book is that it is written primarily for scientists, not statisticians; thus the author emphasizes the broader context of scientific inference, within which statistical analysis plays a critical role. The second edition includes several important additions and improvements including: an expanded introduction to R code, greater emphasis on hypothesis testing and p-values, and an iterative approach to scientific inference through the continued refinement of a model for a data set as the book’s chapters explore more advanced statistical methods. The R code included in the book outlines key computational procedures and provides a workable foundation upon which researchers can conduct scientific inference and statistical analysis with their own data."
―Kenneth H. Reckhow, Professor Emeritus, Duke University

"Statistics is a science to interpret, model, and explain variation. It provides us with a strategy to evaluate potential models rather than a rule to specify a specific statistical model as most people expected. However, most of the time, the importance of model evaluation is largely underestimated in the training of students…Most students, like mine, are taught about statistics in a classical way. They are impressed but somehow intimidated by some technical terms like significance and power effect, thus becoming afraid of applying statistics to real data and questions. This book gives us a new way to teach statistics to biological and ecological students at research level… This book not only teaches us about statistical methodology but also philosophy and strategy in applied statistics…With the modification of chapters 1 to 10, with the addition of a new chapter, this edition features a stronger emphasis on model evaluation compared to that of the previous edition."
―Prof. Bo-Ping Han, Department of Ecology, Jinan University

Woods's new mystery is as sleek and engaging as the upper-class lifestyle of its appealing hero, ex-cop-cum-lawyer-cum-private investigator Stone Barrington. Woods (Blood Orchid) rewards Stone (and readers) by bringing back the beautiful British intelligence agent, code-named Carpenter, who first appeared in The Short Forever, the preceding book in this series. But Carpenter brings Stone more than hot sex and clever dinner conversation-she inadvertently draws him into her life-and-death struggle with one of the world's most efficient and intelligent female assassins, La Biche. While on assignment for lawyer Stone, attempting to photograph an adulterous husband in flagrante delicto, a clumsy assistant gets into trouble and falls into the hands of the NYPD and British Intelligence. Stone's pal and ex-partner from his early days on the NYPD, detective Dino Bacchetti, aids in extricating the assistant, but the incriminating photographs soon involve both men in the hunt for La Biche, who is out to kill Carpenter and avenge an old wrong. Friend and foe alike feed outright lies to Stone and Dino as the chameleonic lady assassin piles body upon body. Woods writes in a dry, witty style that keeps all his characters on a likable keel. The amusing repartee between Stone and Dino is memorably funny. In the end, Stone supplies a surprising dose of morality, and the reader finds that there is more to the story than flesh, flash and derring-do.

*Starred Review* Woods constantly surprises his readers, and nowhere is that more evident than in his latest thriller. Suave cop-turned-lawyer Stone Barrington is asked to hire someone to take photos of Lawrence Fortescue, the husband of a wealthy socialite, with a woman who is presumably his mistress. Stone hires the nephew of an old friend, who proves to be grossly incompetent when he falls through the skylight onto the man he's supposed to be photographing. Fortescue ends up dead, the supposed mistress disappears, and the photographer is charged with manslaughter. As Stone digs deeper, he discovers that Fortescue wasn't killed by the photographer's fall, but by an injection of poison. Enter Carpenter, aka Felicity Devonshire, Stone's contact in British Intelligence. Carpenter suspects the woman involved with Fortescue is actually Marie-Therese du Bois, a trained assassin with a grudge. Carpenter and her colleagues are in town to hunt down Marie-Therese, who is killing agents who were present when her parents were murdered. Carpenter is next on the list, and Stone is determined to protect her. Less predictably, he also wants to help Marie-Therese, whose parents may not have been killed accidentally. Readers will never be less than enthralled. Kristine Huntley

Maybe best Barrington yet - great action suspense & thrills!
By Jerry Bull
We were growing a bit tired of Woods' Stone Barrington series, feeling that the last few were kind of lackluster -- more concerned about Stone's love life and lifestyle than delivering the suspenseful tales we have seen in numerous earlier outings and in Woods' new Holly Barker series. To our delight, "Dirty Work" brings Stone back in a great yarn -- one with such suspenseful action throughout we could hardly turn the pages fast enough. Reminiscent of John Sandford's "Mortal Prey", in which international assassin Clara Rinker is so clever and so successful we dern near wind up rooting for her instead of the good guys (!), "Dirty" features its own female assassin "La Biche", who is out to get revenge on the British secret service for offing her parents. This becomes the entree to re-introduce sexy Brit female agent "Carpenter", whom Stone met in the just prior novel "Short Forever". More than just a fun dinner (and bed) partner for Stone, Carpenter is the link between Stone's efforts as a private eye, Dino Bacchetti's (Stone's best cop friend) work to catch La Biche for the NYPD, and various FBI hangers-on. Woods' imagination worked overtime as he fills the alternating efforts of La Biche to knock off all her foes (we began to lose count she's so good) and the resolve of everybody else to nail her. Some clever work by Stone to actually engage himself as her lawyer (so that he can twist lawyer/clent confidentiality to their mutual purposes) re-surfaces late in the book as a very unusual twist at the end.
Woods is at his very best -- this is a must read not merely for his fans but for anybody enjoying a fast-paced thriller featuring clever bad "guys" and a horde of chasers. The ending brings not only great satisfaction, but who gets theirs brings ample surprise. Enjoy this great read!

An entertaining entry in the Stone Barrington series.
By Nick G
Stone Barrington is back, and this time he is on the loose in New York City.
Assigned by his law firm to aide a client in the dumping of her unfaithful husband, Stone thinks this case to be "dirty work", but when a dead body turns up he realizes there is more to this case than meets the eye.
As Stone begins looking for answers he runs into Carpenter, the beautiful British agent he met while in London. Carpenter is in New York for her own investigation, on a case she is not willing to discuss, but the deeper Stone probes the more he gets the feeling her case is related to his.
Teaming with his ex-partner Dino, Stone hits the streets of Manhattan in search of a very dangerous woman with the answers to a bizarre and complicated crime.
`Dirty Work' is a fun, enjoyable novel...one that will keep readers guessing. The Stone Barrington bestsellers are mysteries filled with surprises, sexy vixens, rogue heroes and intriguing plot lines, and this is one of the better entries in the series.
Stuart Woods can always be depended upon to create an original, fast-paced thriller, and `Dirty Work' is a great way to spend a few hours in an easy chair.
Expect to see this on all the lists.

Short and sweet...but, totally Stone!
By Anita L. McKim-Spilker
Stuart Woods never wastes words. Take Stone's description of Herbie Fisher.."He was small, ferret-like, sleekly dressed, and annoying." I would know Herbie in any crowded room and there's the power of Stuart Woods.
I read Woods less for plot, more for Stone's familar style, and knowing that I will be rewarded with his unique sense of morality. And face it, he's a women's man with constant character...and, heck, he's even a man's man which he proves time and again in his relationship with the ever-present, long-suffering Dino. There are two great scenes with Dino - one, in a hotel restuarant in St. Thomas where their squabbling is even better than any characteristic married couple; and, when they lock themselves on the rooftop and debate on who will slide down the drain pipe.
Plotting is probably predictable and simplistic. Stone takes on the dirty work of providing physical evidence that a rich woman's husband is cheating to invoke a pre-nup clause. Said cheating husband, a former British agent is killed, thus bringing the beautiful British agent, Carpenter, to NY city and Stone's bed. This is "spy light" because Carpenter would never have divulged her operation quite as openly, especially given Dino's position in the NYPD. But Stone is never ordinary or predictable and proves yet again that he's no one's yes-man.
Dialogue is crisp, wity, and fun. Even though it's as quickly paced as Woods' other books, it doesn't diminish the story line. He sticks to the point, doesn't digress unnecessarily and when it ends, there's always something left for Stone's next adventure. Will Arrington return? Will Stone stick with spy light? Will he be in NY or in Europe next time? Will Carpenter reappear? I for one can't wait for the next episode!

Mr. Lucky: A Novel of High Stakes (Tony Valentine Novels (Paperback)), by James Swain

Tony Valentine made his living and his name as a cop in Atlantic City–and is now known worldwide for his ability to spot the kinds of scams, grifts, and rip-offs that cost casinos billions every year. A man with a biting wit who drives a ’92 Honda, Tony is low-profile, old-school, and has seen it all–until he meets the luckiest man on earth.

Ricky Smith was once a small-town loser. Then he went to Las Vegas, jumped out the window of a burning hotel, lived to tell the tale, and tore up the Strip on an incredible winning streak. Ricky didn’t just win at one slot machine or table game. He won at blackjack, roulette, and craps, and then beat the pants off the world’s greatest poker player. Tony knows that goofy, loudmouthed Ricky Smith–or anyone else, for that matter–couldn’t possibly be that fortunate. But when “Mr. Lucky” returns home to the little town of Slippery Rock, North Carolina, he keeps on winning everything from a horse race to a $50,000 lottery.

Hired by a desperate casino, Tony starts to pry into Ricky’s past, his friends, and the strange little town that is benefiting from Ricky’s fame and fortune. Unfortunately for Tony, his cover is blown when he is forced to reveal a trick he has up his own sleeve: a pocket Glock he can shoot with laser-like precision. Suddenly, two men are dead, the cops are on Tony’s tail, and the investigation explodes in violence–putting the lives of Tony’s son and his young family in danger.

For years, Tony’s son Gerry has dueled with his own criminal impulses. Now, the Ricky Smith case has lured Gerry through the gates of temptation and into a murderous confrontation with the Dixie Mafia. With Tony stuck on the slippery slope of Slippery Rock and Gerry fighting for his life, the Valentines are finding out just how bad good luck can get.

Against a neon-tinted backdrop of adrenaline rushes, hard crashes, big money, and high-wire tension, the inimitable James Swain has set his best Tony Valentine novel yet: a funny, furious ride with an astounding array of crooks, marks, and one killer scam.

From Publishers Weekly
In the stunning opener, gambler Ricky Smith takes a swan dive from a burning balcony into a pool as the Riverboat Casino in Vegas goes up in flames. Smith gets up, walks across the street to the Mint and proceeds to win a cool million, never losing a hand. The odds say no one's that lucky. Tony Valentine, head of Grift Sense, a gambling consulting company, gets called in to find out exactly how Ricky cheated, so the casino doesn't have to pay. For his fifth outing (Sucker Bet, etc.), Swain presents his 63-year-old retired cop with his most involved mystery yet. Readers gain expected info on chip scams, while the plot goes delightfully over the top like Agatha Christie at her wildest, with gypsies, drug cartels and one piece of misdirection after another (not least that dive from the balcony). Occasional preachiness interrupts the action, as Tony explains how awful killing bad guys makes you feel--but he still keeps shooting them in the head. The narrative nails gambling cold, noting that televised poker has convinced millions they know how to play: "Professionals had a name for these new players. They called them suckers."

What is casino consultant Tony Valentine doing in Slippery Rock, North Carolina? Catching cheaters, of course, but this time he's stumped. Sure, Ricky Smith of Slippery Rock--who escaped a Vegas fire by jumping five stories into the pool and then, still dripping, beat the house at every game in the casino--is cheating, but how can you cheat at everything? With Tony trying to figure out the scam behind the small-town charm, his wayward son, Gerry, a former scammer himself, is running an errand for Dad and finds himself in the middle of a Mob fight in Mississippi. If all Swain had going for him was a dynamite premise--inside dope on how casino games work--this series would still be good fun, but he adds all the sinew we look for in the best caper novels: quirky characters on both sides of the law who constantly surprise us with just the right mix of comedy, violence, and humanity. Yes, that's Elmore Leonard territory, but Swain has annexed a nice little subdivision all for himself. Bill Ott

Bet on It!
By Gary Griffiths
James Swain's "Mr. Lucky" is a cleverly written, highly entertaining mystery that grabs attention from the first page and doesn't let go. Ricky Smith is the perpetual loser who uncannily strikes it rich, not just once but repeatedly, cleaning up in Vegas at Black Jack, craps, roulette, and even poker, taking a Vegas casino for a cool one-million in a single crazy night. But Smith's luck doesn't stop, as he picks a $50-grand scratch-off sweapstakes ticket and wins the annual charity raffle in hometown Slippery Rock, North Carolina. Suspecting they've been swindled, the casino hires Tony Valentine, former Atlantic City casino cop and expert in gambling scams and cons. Swain, who in real life is in fact an authority in the ways casinos can be swindled, spins a fascinating story that is as revealing as it is fun. Swain's prose is refreshing free of self-importance, breezing through the pages with an unencumbered confidence and dark humor that is easy to take. Put your feet up, sit back and enjoy Swain's guided tour through Vegas casinos and Mississippi river boat gambling barges, of hookers and Carolina hillbillies and redneck thugs, while the cagey Tony Valentine unravels "Mr. Lucky's" sudden streak of good fortune. Fiction at its finest, this was my first James Swain/Tony Valentine novel - it surely won't be my last.

This is a Winner!!
By John R. Linnell
This was my first experience with Mr. Swain's writing and his central character, Tony Valentine. It won't be my last. In fact I have already ordered all of his previous novels and if that isn't an indication of how talented this writer is as a story teller, than I don't know what is. Mr. Lucky is a book you read just for it's sheer entertainment value. Ricky Smith, a loser all of his life, has just won $20,000 gambling in Las Vegas. He has brought a georgeous babe up to his room to celebrate. She has her own ideas of celebration and tries to slip him a Mickey which he catches her at. In the midst of throwing her out of his room, he discovers the hotel on the Vegas strip is on fire. There is no escape for Ricky except to jump from his balcony. His luck continues and he survives the fall and then goes on one of the most remarkable gambling streaks that has ever been seen in Las Vegas. It is almost too good to be true, which is exactly what the casino owners in Vegas believe and his million or so dollars in winnings are held up pending an investigation. Enter Tony Valentine, owner of Grift Sense, a gambling consulting company and one of the most knowledgeable men on the face of the earth concerning scams that people try to perpetrate on casinos. Tony sets out to try and explain how such a streak of luck is a con and while he is doing it, Ricky continues his streak winning a lottery drawing and picking three winners in a horse race to show his luck is still holding.

Checking Ricky out takes Tony to Slippery Rock, NC, Ricky's sleepy home town and it takes his son on a trip to Mississippi where Ricky has bested one of the top poker players in the world in a game of Texas Hold 'Em. Their investigations follow their own courses as they probe deeper into how one man can be so lucky and that is all you really need to know right now, except to say that you will get an education concerning the darker side of the gambling industry and be totally engrossed in the story and it's many characters until at last the truth is discovered.

I bought this book on a hunch that I would like it based on the revews I had seen. That was a lucky on my part and you can get it on it too. It's a winner!!

Best of Series
By Charles J. Marr
In series novels there comes a time when the writer either makes or breaks. This novel is IT and if you have been following the Tony Valentine series and are considering this book - BUY IT. This is fast paced, action, wit, and just enough of the "Gizmo" (dishonest gambling) to keep you reading all night.

The dual plot (Tony and Jerry) is well developed and could be a little more interrelated, but Jerry finally becomes more than a cardboard cut out. In this novel he is in contact with his father learning the family casino detective trade by way of trial and error and with some long distance help from dad while Tony is concerned with the main plot. Enough is said in other reviews concerning the role of "Mr. Lucky" and it is a shame to tell much, but the implications of big cheating is big money and bigger schemes and Swain plays this well.

The added attraction in this novel is the consideration, not in any preaching fashion, but reflectively of the moral and ethical implications of actions: is it proper to simply cut an addicted gambler loose, what is the role of the community in developing a gambling culture, what harm comes to innocents? And in a modern society, how does all this lead to violence? Swain does not preach, but like Tony he knows cause and effect. Come to think of it, logical analysis is very much in the center of his writing.
