About the Author
Joanne Arford, a graduate of Western Michigan University, is currently an adjunct faculty member at the College of DuPage in Illinois. She has written several editions of the Advanced Word Desktop Publishing textbook. Audrey Roggenkamp has been teaching courses in the Business Information Technology department at Pierce College in Puyallup, including keyboarding, skill building, and Microsoft Office programs. In addition to this textbook, Ms. Roggenkamp has authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Publishing including Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. Ian Rutkosky teaches Business Technology courses at Pierce College in Puyallup. Good content; poor cover/binding for a textbook!

I wish it had the coil-type binding instead of the paperback cover. The book is heavy & book would not stay open to pages being studied. Book cover is now heavily creased.

Content is pretty good. The Key Points Review at the end of every chapter is somewhat beneficial if you REALLY have to know the "names" of terms. I just wish the term definitions were better matched to those in the review. Did not use the CD in class so I cannot say whether or not the material is relevant.

Would have preferred the coil binding of past editions; coil binding allows book to lay flat. VERY heavy book due to type of paper used. Could have had similar results with lighter paper.

This is another excellent book from a series of excellent books by the Pythagorean Illuminati. The Pythagorean Illuminati is an ancient secret society of rational freethinkers that was officially founded by the great polymath Pythagoras. Before its founding by Pythagoras the Illuminati existed as a loose confederation of wandering holy men and women, mystics, and esotericists. The Illuminati are not some villains from a crumby science fiction movie as so many conspiracy theorists would have you believe. In fact, the Illuminati are mathematicians, philosophers, scientists, psychologists, artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, futurologists, technologists, and radicals. Some of the greatest minds in history have been members of the Illuminati, people including: King Solomon, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Plato, Simon Magus, Hypatia, Leibniz, Weishaupt, Goethe, Hegel, and many others.

The Pythagorean Illuminati have integrated the subjects of philosophy, science, psychology, politics, history, sociology, religion, the paranormal, and most importantly mathematics, into what scientists have been searching for for years: A Grand Unified Theory of Everything. The Illuminati's Grand Theory answers all of the most important and mysterious questions of existence. Each one of the Illuminati's books delves into multiple aspects of this grand theory. You will constantly find yourself wanting to read just one more page and when you finish a book you won't be able to wait to read the next one in the series.

My advice for new readers is to begin the series with "The Illuminati" by Adam Weishaupt, "The Illuminati Manifesto" by Adam Weishaupt, and "The Meritocracy Party" by Michael Faust. I feel these three books give a very good overview of the Illuminati's religious and political goals and there philosophy in general. After reading these three books you can jump around to whichever books look most interesting to you. I also would try to finish all of the books by Weishaupt and Faust before getting into the new series of books by Mike Hockney called "The God Series". "The God Series" seems to be the culmination of the information that the Illuminati are going to make publicly available about their Grand Unified Theory of Everything. I feel "The God Series" will be much better grasped by a person who has read all of the books that preceded it.

This book, "Sex for Salvation", is packed full of thought-provoking and unique information. "Sex for Salvation" is one of three books by Adam Weishaupt that focuses on the philosophy of sex, the other two are "Hypersex" and "Sex: Illuminati Sex". These are not books for people looking for sexual cheap thrills. The books give you a history of different peoples, cultures, and religions ideas about sex and shows you the sexual contradictions currently plaguing the west, particularly America. These books also show you how sex can be transcendental. The other reviewer for this book, "DimitraEkmektsis" hit the nail on the head with her review and I can't add anymore to it.

Always remember that these books aren't meant to just be read; they are meant to change the world. The Illuminati are serious people with the goal of changing this insane world we are currently living in into a just, altruistic, rational, Meritocracy for EVERYONE, not just a privileged few. If you are also serious and share this goal then these books are for you. You should read them all asap and you should also check out the Illuminati's website armageddonconspiracy.co.uk and their facebook page Ancient Order of The Illuminati. As you read these books figure out what skills you can contribute to the crucial project of changing this world and then go out and get active in your community.

WOW! A refreshing and well researched document on the eternal truth of human nature. Why is this book not #1 on the bestseller list? Sex is big business (perhaps the biggest?) and yet most humans carry inside them a deep shame and guilt regarding their sexual desires. Now I know why!!! I am an author as well Secret Confessions of a High-Priced Call Girl (AUK Adult) - and I receive many, many emails from readers who ask me how they can overcome their repressions. I would safely give those individuals this book to help them understand what has happened, historically, to create the mess we call sex and sexuality these days. This is an important work, and I highly recommend it to anyone! Ignorance is not bliss, when it comes to human sexuality. Knowing the information in this book is to eliminate the roadblocks to a better sex life.

Amazing teen (and adult) read!

What a great read! I use this book as a Literature Circle choice in my high school English classroom. I have had many positive comments from all the students who have read it. Comments such as, "the characters are so realistic", "it is different from the books I usually read, and I loved it" and "I got into it right away". Personally, I liked it because it was a high quality story with rich language and very unlike the typical post-apocolyptic, vampire/werewolf stories that dominant the market today. I also had the pleasure of hosting the author, Craig Russell, in my Grade 12 English class. He connected readily and easily with the students and kept them completely captivated the entire hour, not an easy job! It is so nice to be able to offer high quality, Canadian literature to my students. I recommend this book to teens and adults alike!

BLACK BOTTLE MAN is a nice blend of horror

BLACK BOTTLE MAN is a nice blend of horror, history, folklore and characterization. The premise is that the protagonist is cursed to move on from any place he rests his head every twelve days. He lives in this fashion from his early teens until he's an old, old man. His journey takes us across the US but, more particularly, across time from the Dust Bowl to a modern school shooting. As with the best horror stories, this is a book that's about one thing but REALLY about another. It's about a deal with the devil and the price paid for that, but it's REALLY about impersonal forces that force you from your home, divide you from community, and strain your family.

It's not a perfect book--I thought the ending was a little rushed, and I wanted to know more backstory about the character of Claire--but it's different, it's consistent, and the research shows through without weighing down the narrative. It's flaws are small compared to its strengths and mostly consist of leaving me wanting more information and development.

Huck Finn meets Something Wicked This Way Comes

When I first read Black Bottle Man, I thought of those Mark Twain and Ray Bradbury stories -- two of my favourites. The resemblance wasn't, however, superficial. I have now read the story several times, delighting in newly realised connections and depths.

In a time when every second book on the shelf is the start of another trilogy, when paperback binding plays the role of a burlesque girdle, when so many writers write so many words and so few of them tell, it's almost astonishing to find a real story. A story with a beginning, middle, and end. A story with characters that stand up on the page and speak to you. A story that will call you back again and again. Black Bottle Man is such a story. Craig Russell is such a storyteller.

Ghosts (yurei) have always played a prominent part in Japanese folklore. Although the majority of ghosts are female - due to the perceived strong passions of women - there are also some notable male ghosts. Male ghosts tend to fall into one of two categories - either a warrior who was killed in battle and cannot pull himself away from the historical events in which he figured (these appear mostly in Noh theatre), or an onryo (a vengeful ghost who returns from purgatory to avenge the wrongs done to them in life). Famous examples of male ghosts include the peasant leader Sakura Sogoro, and the painter Kohada Koheiji.
Sogoro was a village spokesman who was crucified, after watching his family butchered, for daring to complain about taxes to the daimyo, lord Hotta Kozuke. His vengeful ghost was said to have returned to haunt Kozuke's castle until the overlord's wife and son died from fright, and Kozuke himself went mad. Kohada Koheiji was a painter who was killed by his wife and her lover. The popular writer Sant� Ky�den (also known as the ukiyo-e artist Kitao Masanobu) developed the Koheiji story further in his novels, Kohada Koheiji and Fukush� Kidan Asaka-numa (Bizarre Tale of Revenge at Asaka Marsh). As vengeance, Koheiji returns to haunt the murderous couple while they are in bed together inside mosquito netting.
The female ghost is perhaps the most recognizable figure in Japanese horror culture, and appears in several differing types; the cat-ghost vampire, the seductress ghost who initiates a post-death love affair with a living human, the ubume or mother ghost who died leaving her children behind and returns to care for them, the yuki-onna or snow-lady, the lethal yurei who suffered badly in life or was murdered by their lover, and whose powerful emotions of jealousy, sorrow, or rage at the moment of death brings them to seek terrible revenge. This last phantom is the one made known globally at the turn of the 20th century through the success of Japanese ghost films such as Ringu ("The Ring”) and Ju-On ("The Grudge”). Their traditional appearance - long black hair in disarray over the face, white skin and white burial clothing - goes back to the very first ukiyo-e images of such creatures, of which the original is said to be Maruyama Okyo's painting of the ghost of Oyuki, from1750. (Oyuki was Okyo's mistress, a geisha who died young; Okyo saw her ghost in a dream one night and was inspired to create this seminal image.) ........

I wish this book were written sooner!

Short, practical, yet very illuminating. Flemming's book helps take away some of the mystique surrounding the video game industry and how to 'break in'. He provides valuable insight into how the industry works, how studios hire employees, and how to poise yourself into becoming an asset, thus helping you land that first job. The first few chapters alone on picking the right school to attend are more than worth the time of any aspiring video game developer! From there, the rest is gravy, touching on how to conduct yourself in an interview as well as the kind of progression you can expect in the field. Highly recommended!

The book is good. It will tell you the "in's and out's" of the industry. The author goes through every step of how to do it. From what type of college to pick to the different positions once your hired to what they mean and what most likely you will be doing in those positions. Its great stuff to learn so you know what you're getting into if you decide its right for you.

Great alternative to the IB Study Guides

I am a big fan of the Biology and Chemistry books in the IB Study Guides, but I took a chance with this instead of the Tim Kirk book. I made the decision solely on having taken Dr. Tsokos's class (and he knows his stuff).
I am very happy with my choice. Topics are explained in very logical sequences, examples are clear, and the helpful hint boxes are, actually helpful.
That said, those used to the IB Study Guides will be shocked at first;
The format is completely different! - no boxes surrounding topics, looks more like a color textbook, with Test Yourself problems at the bottom of each page and the exam style questions for every topic in the back of the book.

If you really love the presentation of the IB Study Guides than this may not suit you, but if you are looking for an alternative, this is a good bet.

Useful for instructors

I have a PhD in elementary particle physics, and after I left research I started a private math and physics tutoring company. I read the pertinent chapter of Tsokos' textbook before I walk into my own classroom so the material will be fresh in my memory. I've found a few errors in the book, but that is true of every textbook, and only one error was really egregious - Tsokos' book scores quite high in terms of accuracy. This is currently my favorite IB physics review text.

No topic could be more demanding or fraught with subjectivity--not to mention mysticism--but Crick insists upon the value of rational thought, logic, and experimental verification. Flawed, but still worth it

The astonishing hypothesis referred to in the title of Crick's book is that all of your phenomenological experience is ultimately reducible to "no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules." So, just how is consciousness neurally instantiated? What the reader should take away from the book is just how difficult of a question this is.

Francis Crick was a thorough going empiricist and he strongly believed that the experimental method was the only way of successfully tackling the problem of consciousness. Along with his close collaborator, Christof Koch, Crick chose visual awareness (rather than say, self-awareness) as the main point of attack. The reason for this is because the visual system is relatively well understood and much easier to study in the laboratory.

Visual processing is an extremely complex business. Essentially, the visual system has to create a fairly high-fidelity representation of the environment (a model) from an array of heterogeneous light patches falling onto the retina. A staggering number of computational processes need to be performed in order for you to become aware of the final output. These processes operate unconsciously, in massively parallel streams. So, what we finally become aware of (our model) is the end result of a great many hidden computations. Much has been learned about the details in which the various features of a visual scene are decomposed and processed, but what remains a mystery is how we ultimately see something (i.e., become visually aware of it). As Crick says, what is required is an account of our "explicit, multilevel, symbolic interpretation of a visual scene."

"The Astonishing Hypothesis" does not provide anything like a Crick-Koch `theory' of consciousness. In fact, Crick goes to some length to eschew any precise definitions or theories. Any such purported theories, he believed, were pre-mature. (The closest that he comes to presenting some kind of a theory is his `Processing Postulate'). Instead what the book offers is a general strategy for submitting the problem to experimental study. Here the idea is to look for neural signatures of awareness or more technically the neural correlates of consciousness (abbreviated NCCs). In a nutshell (excuse the oversimplification), here is what NCCs are all about: submit to study some visual phenomenon which has an ambiguous interpretation (e.g., the Necker cube which can be perceived in two possible ways) and simultaneously obtain measures of neural activity. Some portion of the neural activity associated with the processing of an ambiguous figure will remain invariant (that portion which corresponds to the unchanging retinal input) while another, minimal portion of the neural activity will vary along with the percept. This variant, minimal portion is a good bet for representing a NCC, a neural signature of awareness. Finding a NCC can also tell us many other interesting things, such as whether or not there any special properties of the neurons in question, whether they are located in particular places or cortical layers and so on. And, a similar mechanism which underlies visual awareness is likely to underlie other forms of awareness. [Note that this addresses what David Chalmers has called the `easy' problem of consciousness and does not touch on the `hard' problem. There is a possibility however that Chalmers' hard problem is ill-posed and that there may in fact not be a hard problem to address].

Crick presents the results of many interesting research studies that bear on the problem of consciousness. He devotes some space to the issue of temporal binding and the 40-Hz oscillation hypothesis (or more precisely, the gamma-band oscillation hypothesis) as well as the potential importance of reverberatory thalamo-cortical circuits (see also the work of Gerald Edelman). Crick also speculates about the possibly important role played by the claustrum in the generation of consciousness (something he thought about a lot just prior to his death). Unfortunately for the general reader, this comes only near the end of the book, after a rather protracted discussion of the psychology and neurobiology of vision. For a reader who is unfamiliar with neuroscience, all the hard work done to get to the final portion of the book may produce a low pay-off. It seems that Crick could have got the main point of the book across just as strongly while omitting some of the technical details along the way. For those who have some familiarity with the subject matter the book will actually be an interesting and concise review but since the work was intended for a general readership one must judge it according to that criterion (and this is one of the book's flaws).

Francis Crick died in 2004. This marked a tremendous loss to the field as Crick was blessed with a brilliant mind and he undoubtedly had it in him to make many more important contributions. He brought his enthusiasm to the study of consciousness and made it a bona-fide scientific problem. For this, among other things, he should be celebrated.

A few final remarks about the book's title are in order. First, "The Scientific Search for the Soul" is a sensationalist title that was more likely than not the publisher's idea. Second: as most of the people working in the neurosciences adopt a materialist perspective (the most famous exception of course was Sir John Eccles), the purported astonishing aspect of the hypothesis has sometimes been questioned. And yet, this idea (that our consciousness, in all its richness, is in some mysterious way the result of biophysical processes) really should be astonishing. It is easy to be familiar with the workings of the brain and still slip into old habits of thought, implicitly believing that there really is some homunculus in the head who is doing all of the perceiving. As Crick says, "A man may, in religious terms, be an unbeliever but psychologically he may continue to think of himself in much the same way as a believer does, at least for everyday matters."

It is interesting to speculate about whether our experience of ourselves would change even in the hypothetical case that we did have a complete neurobiological theory of consciousness.

The Not So Astonishing Hypothesis

I purchased "The Astonishing Hypothesis" by Francis Crick with great expectations. I am very much interested in the scientific search for what some call "soul" and was under the impression that Crick (co-discoverer of the double helix DNA structure) had marshalled plausible or powerful evidence that the soul merely is a person's mental activities that result from the behavior of nerve cells, glial cells, atoms, molecules and ions that influence glial or nerve cells. For the most part, mutatis mutandis, I affirm Crick's hypothesis. However, I don't think "The Astonishing Hypothesis" comes anywhere close to providing information that supports Crick's hypothesis. His detour on how the human brain sees is at times interesting, but ultimately not all that helpful in illuminating Crick's "astonishing hypothesis." The book (page 259) supplies a reasonable answer to presupposed objections via-a-vis Crick's modus operandi for supporting his hypothesis. The scientist explains why he chose the visual system to buttress his hypothesis. It evidently yields most easily to "experimental attack" and is only the start (i.e. a prolegomenon) of explaining what soul is. The work's provisional nature is to be applauded. However, since the attack on "soul" has just started, it seems that Crick should have been more modest in his claims and not proclaimed the death of the human soul (as the term is commonly understood) until a full "experimental attack" of the brain had been carried out. Personally, I believe that theoreticians who have undertaken studies in the philosophy of mind offer more reasonable alternatives or explanations for "soul" than Crick does. The concept of supervenience more adequately accounts for "mind" or "soul" than "The Astonishing Hypothesis" does. While "mindness" is probably a higher-level phenomenon based on a lower-level phenomenon, as are qualia, it is my belief that mind is not reducible to brain states. But without the brain, mind does not exist: mind supervenes on the brain. William Hasker's "The Emerging Self" satisfactorily develops these points.

Not a light read

Francis Crick is probably best known to most of us from high school biology classes for his pioneer work with James Watson on the structure and function of DNA. In his book the Astonishing Hypothesis he tackles a topic hardly less complex, the origin of awareness. Although the subtitle would suggest that the discussion is the scientific proof for the existence of the soul--and possibly thereby the existence of God--the reader who takes up the book with this expectation will be resoundingly disappointed. Instead he or she will find a very convoluted discussion of brain neurophysiology, the theoretical basis of sensory systems, the attempts to synthesize human neural function in computers, and the author's personal theory of free will. What if anything any of this has to do with the soul is anybody's guess.
On the whole, I have no quarrel with the author's choice of subject matter, but I found the book at times overly in depth and at others too brief in its discourse. I also found that the train of thought was a little confusing, as though the author went off on interesting tangents at great lengths and could only with great effort get back on track. It was as though he could have used a better outline to begin with or had attempted to cover too much in too small a space. It might also have arisen from his need to extensively paraphrase the work of others in fields in which he himself has less expertise. The discussion of the neural function of the human brain, particularly the oddities of its dysfunction were quite good. Indeed I felt it was an excellent update on what I had learned years ago in A&P for nursing school. The discussion of neural networks and artificial intelligence got a little too detailed for me, but if you're the type who finds Roger Penrose a pleasant afternoon's read, then Crick's account might actually be a little too light minded for you.
In general I found the writer's style was labored enough for it to require a concerted effort to plow my way through it. It took several attempts, during which I read several other books on wholly different topics, before I could actually finish it. I even went to the extreme of taking it with me to my health club where I would be a "captive audience" with nothing better to take my mind off the boredom of my half hour on the tread mill. On the whole, I preferred boredom. While I've no doubt the gentleman is a very learned individual, I've undertaken more readable books on the subject of mind and awareness. States of Mind by Conlon and Hobson would probably be more understandable by and enjoyable to the average reader, although this book too tends to try to cover too much in too little space.
