Amazon.com Review
Most books about career advancement are either weighty examinations about success in the workplace (e.g., How to Be a Star at Work and Working with Emotional Intelligence) or flippant, humorous takes on surviving the countless inanities of modern work life (e.g., Working Wounded). Jeffrey Fox's book, How to Become CEO: The Rules for Rising to the Top of Any Organization is neither. Instead, Fox presents 75 commonsense rules about successfully conducting your career.

Rules like "Know Everybody by Their First Name" and "No Goals No Glory" may seem obvious; others, such as "Don't Take Work Home from the Office" or "Don't Have a Drink with the Gang" may not. Each is accompanied by page or two of succinct and thought-provoking explanation. For example, for rule 27, "Don't Hide an Elephant," Fox writes, "Big problems always surface. If they have been hidden, even unintentionally, the negative fallout is always worse. The 'hiders' always get burned, regardless of complicity. The 'discoverers' always are safe, regardless of complicity." Wise and to the point, How to Become CEO will help just about anybody's career, whether you want to become CEO or not. --Harry C. Edwards

From Booklist
Fox heads his own marketing consulting company, and he demonstrates here that he knows how to package an idea. While there is nothing especially original about a list of rules for getting ahead, Fox's guide is filled with 75 tips that are short, sweet, and to the point. Moreover, the ideas themselves are fresh. You have to admire the pluck of someone who counsels spending one day a month in the library and recommends sending handwritten notes. For each suggestion, Fox includes one or two pages of elaboration. Other advice: Always take vacations. Always take the job that offers the most money. Never write a nasty memo. Don't take work home from the office. Never let a good boss make a mistake. And, nary a mention of Machiavelli or Sun-Tzu. Refreshing! David Rouse

Should Be Retitled: How To Win Raises and Promotions
By Donald Mitchell
I had a hard time rating this book. I gave it a 5 for its dedication to Leigh Knowles, deceased chairman of Beaulieu Vineyards, a truly terrific guy and CEO. I gave it a 1 for having a misleading title. The book has little to do with becoming CEO. I gave it a 4 for generally useful advice about workplace do's and don'ts. I gave it an 7 for marketing. I rounded that to a 4. Decide for yourself what rating to give this book.
I write an article for Chief Executive Magazine each year about the best practices of the most successful CEOs. As part of this work, I have met and interviewed hundreds of the most envied corporate leaders. The subject of how each became CEO and what the lessons are usually comes up. Based on their experiences, you would write a substantially different list than Mr. Fox has provided. Key elements would include learning to do important tasks that the company needs done that no one else is doing; having a great relationship with shareholders and the board of directors; having massive integrity that is frequently demonstrated to others; making and keeping your promises; and establishing an environment in which other people perform very effectively. There's a lot more. If you are interested in more, read my article in the May 1999 issue on The Helpful Habits of the CEO... -- click on the leadership file folder to find the article).
The second problem with this book is that Mr. Fox acknowledges that most CEOs in companies get their jobs by either starting or buying the company. He then goes on to provide no direct advice on how to do either one.
The third problem with the book is that it provides general advice rather than specific advice about you and your own organization. Many of the rules he describes will vary from company to company. In front of many of his pieces of advice should be a first step: Ask the successful people in your company what the right thing to do is. In front of many of his comments about working with others should be a first step of asking the people involved what they would like you to do. The book assumes a communications stalled approach that can lead to backfires in many cases. For example, many people would prefer that you give them immediate verbal feedback along with a pat on the back when they do a good job. They would not be as pleased with a hand-written note, as this book recommends.
The final problem with this book is that it really covers the same subject as How To Be A Star At Work. That is a terrific book, and well worth reading.
If you do decide to read this book, pay the most attention to the advice to set written goals, score yourself on them, and pay attention to the goals. Research has shown that only one percent of people do this, and they usually outperform the 99 percent who do not.
Good luck in your learning of how to become a CEO!

How to write a best seller
By Michael Gering
Jeffrey Fox has written a book that will please some people immensely, but intensely annoy others. "How to become a CEO" is a short easy to read book. Each chapter is a two-page piece of advice, "crisp, blunt, frank, generally ... judgmental" and very, very easy to digest. I read book in less than half an hour.
Some of the seventy-five pieces of advice are cynical, "Always take the job that offers the most money", and "Make allies of your peers subordinates". Some are puritanical "Don't have a drink with the gang" and "Don't smoke". Some are eccentric "Send hand written notes", and "Go to the library one day a month". And some are good emotional intelligence "Never write a nasty memo" and "Live for today, plan for tomorrow, forget yesterday".
You probably won't agree with all of them, nor agree that all of them are profound. Yet some may strike a cord, or remind you of something you really know but no longer practice. They are written in a style which will appeal to some, but not all. What one might call a "popular magazine type style".
If this is the sort of book you like, then you will like this sort of book. Otherwise, for the sake of your blood pressure, I suggest that you read something else.

How to live your corporate life...
By M. Schubert
Ignore the "How to Become CEO" portion of the title. Focus just on the byline: "The Rules for Rising to the Top of Any Organization". That is truly what this book is about. Fox has organized this book into 75 nuggets of no-nonsense advice for living your corporate life. Each chapter is an average of 3 pages, and is devoted to backing up one nugget of advice.
I don't believe anything he says is earth shattering, nor do I believe it possible to implement all of his ideas. However, the way each idea was backed up with simple reasoning and examples made it easy to understand the motivation behind it. It also made it easy to determine whether it was applicable to my situation and in many cases, gave examples of how to handle particular situations.
I can speak from my own experience that just implementing two pieces of his advice has positively changed the way that I approach my work environment and the way coworkers and management perceive me. This was well worth the money I spent on this book. There is no doubt in my mind that anyone who is serious in advancing into the ranks of upper management will find a minimum of 3-5 nuggets that help shape their attitudes and habits to attain that goal within this book!

A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter M. Miller Jr.

In the depths of the Utah desert, long after the Flame Deluge has scoured the earth clean, a monk of the Order of Saint Leibowitz has made a miraculous discovery: holy relics from the life of the great saint himself, including the blessed blueprint, the sacred shopping list, and the hallowed shrine of the Fallout Shelter.

In a terrifying age of darkness and decay, these artifacts could be the keys to mankind's salvation. But as the mystery at the core of this groundbreaking novel unfolds, it is the search itself—for meaning, for truth, for love—that offers hope for humanity's rebirth from the ashes.

Amazon.com Review
Walter M. Miller's acclaimed SF classic A Canticle for Leibowitz opens with the accidental excavation of a holy artifact: a creased, brittle memo scrawled by the hand of the blessed Saint Leibowitz, that reads: "Pound pastrami, can kraut, six bagels--bring home for Emma." To the Brothers of Saint Leibowitz, this sacred shopping list penned by an obscure, 20th-century engineer is a symbol of hope from the distant past, from before the Simplification, the fiery atomic holocaust that plunged the earth into darkness and ignorance. As 1984 cautioned against Stalinism, so 1959's A Canticle for Leibowitz warns of the threat and implications of nuclear annihilation. Following a cloister of monks in their Utah abbey over some six or seven hundred years, the funny but bleak Canticle tackles the sociological and religious implications of the cyclical rise and fall of civilization, questioning whether humanity can hope for more than repeating its own history. Divided into three sections--Fiat Homo (Let There Be Man), Fiat Lux (Let There Be Light), and Fiat Voluntas Tua (Thy Will Be Done)--Canticle is steeped in Catholicism and Latin, exploring the fascinating, seemingly capricious process of how and why a person is canonized. --Paul Hughes

From the Publisher
Down the long centuries after the Flame Deluge scoured the earth clean, the monks of the order of St. Leibovitz the Engineer kept alive the ancient knowledge. In their monastery in the Utah desert, they preserved the precious relics of their founder: the blessed blueprint, the sacred shopping list and the holy shrine of fallout shelter.

Watched over by an immortal wanderer, they witnessed humanity's rebirth from ashes, and saw reenacted the eternal drama of the struggle between light and darkness, life and death.

Eerily prescient; but don't expect fast pace
By Gerri Bauer
An amazing novel. Anyone who starts questioning why they're reading it, during the first few chapters (as I did), my advice is to stick with it. There's too much here that needs to be heard. Miller combines futurism, history, faith, science, cynicism, sarcasm, allegory ... to warn us, from his vantage point of a half-century ago, about a future some now see on the distant horizon. And then it will be repeated all over again. The book is downright scary in that respect.

Keep in mind that Miller was writing in the 1940s and 1950s. Among other things, he has characters argue or mull over intelligent design, euthanasia, "removable" conscience, politicians placating their country's "patriotic opinionated rabble," the line between church and state, and the destruction and rise of civilizations over millennia. Two examples of some phrases that jumped out at me:
- When scholar Thon Taddeo questions how a great civilization could destroy itself, the answer from the monsignor is "Perhaps ... by being materially great and materially wise, and nothing else."
- Brother Joshua, about to colonize space in order to save shreds of civilization as his current world implodes, thinks that, "the closer men come to perfecting for themselves a paradise, the more impatient they seemed to become with it, and with themselves as well." Joshua thinks that a dark world can yearn and hope, but a world "bright with reason and riches" begins to "sense the narrowness of the needle's eye," and the realization rankles.

My one complaint is that Miller uses way too many Latin phrases that I didn't take time to look up the first time through. (And I'm Catholic and even studied Latin in high school.) I will re-read this book with a dictionary at hand in order to mine even more from its depths.

60 Years Old and Still a Great Read
By Hank B.
A friend asked about SCI/FI books to read and this was one of the first I thought of to recommend.

After that I thought it was time to reacquaint myself with this Classic and memorable Book. Not Sorry I did!

This book was one of my first ventures into Science Fiction almost 40 years ago and it has been a story line in my thoughts on and off during that time.

I remembered the plot line and the note with Pastrami, Kraut and Bagels very vividly.

But I had forgotten the actual word smithing that was the heart of the Book iIt was something that has been lacking in many of the current publications.

It took a mastery of words and intellect to craft this Classic, Long Lasting, Intelligent and a Compellation that still over 55 years later still holds value and relevance.

Cold war Iconology and the loss of related history still holds true in a different form but it still can be interpreted and applied in todays world of threat and insecurity.

It is a Compelling and Great Read and a book that should be included in a true SCI/FI aficionado's Library.

Read it and ENJOY!

Timeless Question - Is there hope for us?
By TL88
I have waited many years to read this book and it was well worth it. It's a timeless novel, as relevant today as it was when it first came out. There are many chilling passages that sneak up that left me thinking, worriedly, about the future - how we never seem to learn from our mistakes and an appalling realisation that we could be all bent on self destruction, despite full knowledge and awareness of the ultimate consequence. There are no superheroes or comic book characters here, only thought provoking actions whose importance to the story are revealed by seemingly ordinary prose with the effect of a velvet hammer. Told mainly from the viewpoint of sheltered monks, the story had me thanking Google Translate for Latin and me rueing taking Spanish in high school instead. But these occasional rest stops gave cause for savouring the quality of the novel. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in a contemplative apocalyptic saga, but requires patience to appreciate fully.

The influence of Buddhist scriptures on Gospels, Acts and Epistles
By Rama Rao
The authors provide an historical and scriptural evidence to show that a significant part of New Testament was influenced by the Buddhist literature and the Acts of Buddha. This book focuses on sacred text and does not deal directly with the facts that Jesus' spent several years in Kashmir, India, when it was under the influence of Buddhist and Jain teachings. The flow of Buddhist thought occurred at three main levels, the Buddhist missionaries carrying the message of Buddha into Egypt, Syria and Palestine are well documented in the history, especially during and after Emperor Asoka. Strong trade relationship help bring the Vedic and Upanishadic culture into the Middle East, and finally Jesus' life in Kashmir, India brought him closer to the wisdom of Buddha and the teachings of Upanishads.

The views of Jesus presented in Sermon on the Mount directly calls to mind an inner relationship with Buddha's teachings. Both Buddha and Jesus warn their followers about false prophets. The parallels between Buddhist thought and certain New Testament stories; Jesus' parables and his sayings are not new. For example, Buddha said "whosoever sees dharma, see me." Christ in the Gospel according to John says; "He that seeth me, seeth Him that sent me" (John 12:45). The dharma is the greatest cosmic law underlying the world, corresponding to the concept of the Word, the Logos, in the Gospel which begins by declaring, "The Word was God."

The genealogical trees of Jesus point to royal origins (similar to Buddha), as described in the Gospel of Matthew. The circumstance surrounding the birth of Jesus is similar to that of Krishna of Mahabharata. There are a number of parallels to the stories of Jesus' childhood and Buddha as described in Lalitavistara, and Nidanakatha. Two famous miracles is known to be performed by Jesus was taken from Buddhists precedents; the loaves and the fishes (Mathew 14:15-21; Mark 6:35-44, and Luke 9:13-17). This originates from the introduction to Jataka 78. In this miracle, Buddha satisfied the hunger of 500 inhabitants of a monastery, and some bread remained. According to New Testament accounts Jesus fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fishes. Jesus' walking on water episode described in Mark 6:52 and its similarities with Buddha walking on water is striking. Many similarities in these two stories are listed by theologian Norbert Klatt. The Buddhist scriptures of Dighanikaya and the Majjhimanikaya describes Buddha walking on water and in Mahavamsa, Buddha crosses the Ganges. In an episode described in Mahavagga, Buddha's disciple, Kassapa sees Buddha walking on water, fearful about Buddha, Kassapa asks, "Are you there, great mendicant monk?" "It is I, Kassapa" Buddha replied, calming him down. Jesus' disciples also feared that they saw a ghost after seeing Jesus walking on water, to them Jesus replies, "It is I" (Mark 6:50 and John 6:20). In Matthew 14:28-33, Apostle Peter also tries to walk on the water but starts to sink. This episode is surprisingly similar to the introduction to Jataka 190, where Sariputta, a disciple of Buddha attempts to walk on water of river Aciravati and begins to sink by a strong wave. When he regains control of himself and start meditating deeply, he could walk on water.

Buddha always treated everyone equally irrespective of their caste or social status. Jesus was equal in this respect. In one episode, Buddha draws anger of upper class followers when he accepts a courtesan's invitation for a dinner. Jesus also made similar gestures and goodwill by accommodating less fortunate and oppressed people in the society. Another story that is illuminating is the story of Ananda and Prakriti and its similarities to Jesus in John 4:5-42. While travelling through the countryside, Ananda, the disciple of Buddha feels thirsty and approaches a well and ask a Matangi girl named Prakriti for a drink of water. When she expresses fear that she belongs to a lower caste and she can not approach a holy man, Ananda responds, "my sister, I am not asking about your caste or your family; I am asking whether you can give some water to drink" (Divyavadana 217). This story is similar to Jesus' encounter at Jacob's well near Sychar in Samaria where he asks for some drinking water. The woman of Samaria replies, "How is that thou, being a Jew, asking drink from me, a woman of Samaria." Jesus says, if she knew who he was, she would ask him for a drink and he would give her "living water" (John 4:5-42). In his instruction to his disciples, Jesus says, "in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40). This is similar to Buddha's instructions, "anyone, O monks, who want to stand by me, should stand by the afflicted" (Mahavagga 8, 26.3)

Jesus first public appearance has many similarities with that of Buddha. After leaving his palace, Siddhartha sought teachers and join Rudraka the Brahmin. When young Siddhartha realizes that his teachings would not lead to liberation and insight; he decides go into wilderness in order to attain realization through strict asceticism. Five of Rudraka's followers join him but when Siddhartha gives up fasting and ascetic excesses realizing that would not lead him into his objective: His followers leave him thinking that he has given up search for redemption. Jesus also becomes the disciple of John the Baptist, a strict ascetic and penitent of his time. He gets baptized and then goes into wilderness and fasts; some of the disciples of John the Baptist follow him. Soon Jesus also gives up ascetic excesses. "John came neither eating nor drinking.....The son of man came eating and drinking..." (Matthew 11:18-19). Jesus' radical view included rejection of baptism and John's strict asceticism; instead he preached love, tolerance and harmony like Buddha and won many followers.

The influence of Upanishads and Vedanta also had some impact on epistles. Jesus expresses the idea of the unity of Atman and Brahman in the words; "I and Father are One" (John 10:30). The evangelist John also viewed everyone as god's equal; "I said, ye are gods" (John 10:34).

GOOD RESEACH MISSAPPLIED WITH PARTIALITY
By A Customer
Although the scholarly research in this work is laudable, the authors seem to have been caught up in a couple of prejedicial problems. The first one deals with attempting to give many parallels for the New testamant from Hindu sources, while largely avoiding the word "Hinduism" by simply and repeatedly calling them "Indian Sources". And in the same vein, although Lord Krishna's name was mentioned once (as some ancient god),very unscholarly. The Gita, oneof the world's greatest scriptues, and no doubt known to theBuddha, would weigh heavily in this subject. But was it mentioned or did I miss it? Krishna's name was also omitted from the "people" list at the back of the book. I believe the ancient records indicate that Jesus would have had more than sufficient experience with the great Hindu Yogis during his lengthy India visit, this would be the real source of many comparisons the authors' use, and very little data found its way into the NT from influences of Buddhistic origins of the Middle East. JESUS, like so many others through ancient history, well knew about the GREAT YOGIS of INDIA (Pythagoras and Appolonious etc), and when they made such a long treck, would not stop at only other schools along the way, they usually sought out the most prominent Masters and Yogis, as well as the original sources of the VEDAS,UPANISHADS,GITA ETC. No doubt they would encounter others as well, but the slant these authors give this whole subject, is remeniscent of the same onesided approached indulged in by many of those in the early church establishment. FINALLY, one can surely find certain major problems in the holy writ of any of the great religions - the least of which is translation to another language. But history has shown that even in works that may be less than perfect, the power and influence of that illusive original Jesus, has produced many Christlike beings, eg. Padre Pio of Italy. And surely effected the lives of untold millions, I doubt that one of JESUS strong concepts, ! that of the personal "Heavenly Father", came from Buddhist influence, as they seem to follow a concept of the universal impersonal mind only. The mentions of other such matters as reincarnation are clearly from Hindu Origins.

Spiritual Graffiti, by Jeff Brown

In this entrancing collection, author Jeff Brown shares more of his profound quotes and musings with us. Words written on walls- in his home, in back-alleys, on Facebook- come vibrantly to life in this poignant offering. Building on the popularity of his first two quotes books- Love it Forward and Ascending with Both Feet on the Ground- Brown takes it to the next level in this collection, cutting straight to the heart of the matter with wisdoms that both energize and uplift. This book is alive! In a style uniquely his own, Brown invites readers in the direction of their own transformation. They are invited, and they are supported as they endeavor to find meaning on their life's journey. Spiritual Graffiti is a lighthouse of possibility, one that both celebrates our perfectly imperfect humanness and reminds us that there is hope at every turn. As an added bonus, Jeff has included more of the inspirations he wrote for ABC'S 'Good Morning America', and his popular healing blog 'Apologies to the Battered Child'. This book is a beautiful gift for anyone who is seeking a deeper and more authentic life.

ENDORSEMENTS

"This book is a magnificent exhale for the soul. Many sincere seekers become bamboozled by spiritual teachers who suggest that we ignore our feelings, numb our bodies, and violate our intuition in the name of enlightenment. But Jeff Brown humbly offers an alternative, even rebellious, viewpoint. With exquisite sensitivity and compassion, he acknowledges that we can't wake up without grounding our self-realization into our feeling, sensing human bodies. I am a voracious student of spiritual teaching, but Jeff Brown is a spiritual teacher I truly trust, marrying incisive, almost surgical truth with supreme kindness in a way that enlivens your spirit and makes you feel your heart. He is like a scalpel with a spoonful of sugar." ~LISSA RANKIN, NY Times bestselling author of Mind Over Medicine.

"Jeff Brown's words are the much needed love-splattered slap to our wearied New Age-filled heads. In Spiritual Graffiti we get a glimpse into the way that light and positivity alone will never reveal to us the mystery of both our humanity and our Godhood. Through his decades of deep personal inquiry, Jeff reveals his painful and potent intimacy with his own darkness as a pathway to revelation. Spiritual Graffiti is a deep-dive into the soul of one man, and yet a mirror for all who find themselves on the journey towards "enREALment." I'm a forever fan." ~KATIE SILCOX, spiritual teacher and NY Times bestselling author of Healthy, Happy, Sexy-Ayurveda Wisdom for Modern Women.
"Spiritual Graffiti sizzles with courage. With a fearless pen, Jeff Brown inscribes his unique wisdom in practical, succinct, and heart-centered language that sagaciously calls out the negligence of today's New Age movement and walks us boldly to our highest callings." ~SUSAN FRYBORT, author of Hope is a Traveler.

Filled with raw truth, inspiration and plenty of insights into the path of awakening, this book is sure to serve those well who read it." ~CHRIS GROSSO, author of Indie Spiritualist and Everything Mind.

"Jeff Brown's latest work is a testimonial tothe soul. His writingis at the edge, breaking through the cosmic and cultural barriers to reveal things in an entirely new way.He understands the vital importance to converse about the soul in every aspect of life. This makes him a modern day Troubadour. A must read for Divine Lovers everywhere!" ~ANAIYA SOPHIA, Author of Sacred Sexual Union & co-author of Womb Wisdom

"Spiritual Graffiti sprays us with a rebel call to deeper love. Jeffrey Brown's words masterfully woke me up, pissed me off, and then openly seduced me back into my own heart. He invites us drop the pretense, befriend our shadow and find God-Goddess in the very earth under our fingernails. This little book offers a banquet of soul nourishment and tangible guidance on how to be more alive in walking our own truth. The messiness of life and love makes a little more sense looking through this sacred lens. Bravo."~LISA SCHRADER, Author, Coach and Founder ofAwakeningShakti.com

Cuneiform: Ancient Scripts, by Irving Finkel, Jonathan Taylor

Cuneiform script on clay tablets is, as far as we know, the oldest form of writing in the world. The resilience of clay has permitted these records to survive for thousands of years, providing a fascinating glimpse into the political, economic, and religious institutions of the ancient Near Eastern societies that used this writing system.

A concise and accessible introduction to the topic, this book traces the history of cuneiform from its beginnings in the fourth millennium BC to its eventual demise in the face of the ever expanding use of alphabetic Aramaic in the first millennium BC. The authors explain how this pre-alphabetic system worked and how it was possible to use it to record so many different languages. Drawing on examples from the British Museum, which has the largest and most venerable cuneiform collection in the world, this lively volume includes elementary school exercises, revealing private letters, and beautiful calligraphic literature for royal libraries.

A great example is the simple one sound for the Sumerian ...
By Fred P.
Short but effective summary of just about all aspects related to cuneiform with some effective close-up illustrations of tablets. Examples of the original accounting list pictographs from 3200 BC in 300 year development of an actual writing system. Early cuneiform writing involves a mixture of consonant-vowel syllable sounds, symbols for specific words, and short words from the original Sumerian standing for longer words now pronounced in Akkadian. A great example is the simple one sound for the Sumerian word “water” which stands in for a multi-syllable Akkadian word. Everything made much more complicated today by being written in an unknown language. There are problems in that some syllables can be represented by several different signs, and some signs can represent different words or sounds. Of course, we have similar issues with modern English writing. Some suspect that the multiplicity of the same signs for different words may indicate that Sumerian was a tonal language like Chinese. Investigators are helped by the existence of scribes’ lists showing the equivalence of Sumerian and Akkadian terms. Nice illustration of how the cuneiform stylus instrument was made and how it created the wedge-shaped impressions. We hear that ink was used to annotate some tablets, and there are references to parchment cuneiform texts, too. Bricks were often stamped with cuneiform inscriptions with a kind of moveable typeset suggested by some signs being inserted in an inverted position. This kid of reverse image preparation must have been familiar from use of seal impressions but never used in any other way. Perhaps half of all existing known cuneiform tablets come from a single source – Ashurbanipal’s great archive at Nineveh. Cuneiform just barely survived into early historic times (mostly in ancient astronomical texts) so that there are useful Greek crib tablets using Greek letters to give the phonetic value of cuneiform symbols circa 100 AD to suggest what late Akkadian and Sumerian sounded like. Generally good, lengthy explanatory captions for figures, but one or two (such as the cross-section of a typical clay tablet) are hard to follow.

Good especially for beginners
By Flash Sheridan
As Beebee's review notes, this is a short book intended primarily for beginners; but I found it a helpful unified presentation of introductory material scattered through other works. In particular, the pictures are by far the best I've seen; I only wish more use had been made of the technique in, e.g., figures 2 and 54, of highlighting relevant characters.
The authors are curators, not professors, and I suspect the editors deliberately dumbed the book down. Some of the prose felt superfluous, and I fear the bibliography was ruthlessly trimmed; e.g., Harriet Crawford did not (thank Nidaba) write _The Sumerian World_, but merely edited it.

The World's First Writing System
By Dennis Zeunert
In about 3200 BC, temple accountants in the Mesopotamian city state of Uruk invented a writing system that transformed record keeping and communications. It would endure for the next 3000 years, spreading throughout the Middle East, eventually reaching such areas as Armenia, Bahrain, Israel, Iran, and Egypt. Scribes, with reed stylus's, wedged cuneiform symbols on soft clay tablets that would later dry and harden in the sun. Five thousand years later archaeologists uncovered thousands of these tablets in buried ancient palace archives and libraries.

Cuneiform comprises 600 – 1000 characters representing complete or parts of words and syllables. The numbering systems were based on the numbers 60 and 10. The calendar was based on lunar months (29 – 30 days), with each year having 360 days. The decipherment of cuneiform, needing a type of Rosetta stone, was made possible by a trilingual cuneiform inscription in Old Persian, Babylonian, and Elamite of Persian king Darius on a mountain pass in Eastern Iran. Also, amazingly, archaeologists found a perfect tablet listing a table of signs, pronunciations, and meanings.

The book is not intimidating, with simple to understand explanations, and many color photographs. It is only 103 pages with a complete index. The nine chapter titles facilitate searching for specific subjects, such as “Who used cuneiform writing?” and “How did it work?”

After You, by Natascha McElhone

Natascha McElhone was away filming in LA, with her two sons and pregnant with her third child when she received news that her beloved husband, Martin, had died suddenly of a heart attack. Unable to accept this devastating loss, she began writing letters to her husband, telling him how she felt, and how she and her children were adapting to life without him. The result is "After You", a triumphant testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It is a profoundly moving tribute to Natascha McElhone's three sons, whose appetite for life led the author through her darkest moments, and to their remarkable father.

A monument to love and courage
By doronjunger
Great art, or for that matter any other line of work, is created out of love, it would appear. So it is with this great little book of letters composed by the actress Natascha McElhone in her first year after the sudden and wholly unexpected death of 42 year-old husband, plastic surgeon Martin Kelly. Her grief's unadulterated rawness and her searing emotional honesty make reading this 110-page volume nothing short of a tour de force, and we can only speculate about the emotionally wrenching experience, however therapeutic, of writing it, and her brave decision ultimately to publish it. The very fact of this book's publication renders it a work of love directed not just to the husband and father who never these letters shall read, or their three sons who one day, no doubt, will do so filled with immense pride, but readers at large, privileged to vicariously accompany Natascha for the especially turbulent first twelve months of the emotional rollercoaster that constitutes life after Martin (lest my referring to them here by their first names seems overly familiar, any pretense to detachment or formality by the end of the ride seems the greater inappropriateness). Collectively we can consider ourselves fortunate that Natascha came down on this side of the proverbial fence she makes clear she was on at one point about publishing her letters.

I did actually know Martin, in my days training to be a plastic surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in London, as a smart, personable, subtly funny, driven and enviably talented colleague, and once met Natascha, briefly, at the hospital's 1997 Christmas party. I last spoke with Martin in 2008, when I inadvertently interrupted his out-patient clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital by calling him from Manhattan, where I then lived, for advice, which he graciously gave, on a friend's baby born in London with a facial deformity.

Martin and Natascha's motto was: "Work hard. Expect nothing. Celebrate." Her book expresses it perfectly. The mere fact and tragic circumstances of Martin's death notwithstanding, Natascha never, at least not in these pages, wallows in self-pity, and owing to her evidently irrepressible, whimsical and self-deprecating sense of humor I found myself more often smiling than her book's unfathomably sad subject matter brought tears to my eyes (though there was plenty of that). Far from the diva one might count on her to be, or the glamorous 'OK Magazine' lifestyle of otherwise untroubled privilege she might be expected to lead, Natascha comes across as vulnerable and unedited, all the more lovable for her unguardedly, bravely and generously shared insecurities and neuroses (in contrast, Martin - after all the object of this oeuvre - remains subtly less approachable to us, perhaps because through Natascha's lens he appears too close to perfect).

Natascha's description of the experience of grief from her children's perspective is impossible to remain unaffected by. One particularly moving passage, indicative I suppose of this cyberage of ours, is the incident she recounts, close to the anniversary of Martin's death, of Theo prompting her to vainly click on Martin's Skype username to see what would happen.

It comes as no surprise to read on Amazon's UK site and elsewhere that Natascha's book is helping bereaved readers in their grief. But this isn't a book just for widows and widowers - I would recommend it also to wives and husbands. A marriage therapist friend of mine once revealed to me that she mourns her husband daily to appreciate what she has. And husbands and fathers may gain a glimpse of how their loved ones might remember them in death, and thus be reminded of what matters in life. As profoundly and completely as Natascha experienced being loved by Martin, it is the palpable intensity of her love for him, and so articulately expressed acute grief over her loss, that surely make him the envy of every man alive. What better memorial?

Completely Real
By Zachary
Amazing book, amazing writer, amazing woman.

It's a completely raw & real book, and one can really feel her pain and heartache at the loss of her husband.

I've always been drawn to her as a woman watching the show Californication cause she seemed very real, and this book only confirms my assumption.

Highly recommended.

Poignant
By T. M. Truax
I bought this because I am a fan of Natascha Mcelhone and wanted to see how she was as a writer. What I found was a requiem of passage ~ the integration of grief and celebration over her husband's life and passing. It was honest, gritty, gut wrenching, and engaging.
