About the Author

Christopher R. Gareis, EdD, is Associate Professor of educational leadership at the College of William and Mary, where he also served as Associate Dean for teacher education for more than a decade. He regularly works with school districts in the areas of classroom-based assessment, mentoring, instructional leadership, strategic planning, and teacher evaluation.

Leslie W. Grant, PhD, is Assistant Professor of educational leadership at the College of William and Mary. She has been a teacher, an instructional leader, and a content editor and item writer for a major test publishing company. This book shows how to deal with the early failures that invariably plague product manufacturers whether the product be components or complete systems, electronic or mechanical devices. The text provides a basic understanding of why failure patterns appear as they do in real life and then shows how to cope with the problem on a sound engineering basis. Burn-in is used to eliminate early failures in components or systems and the book shows how to analyse and plan a burn-in procedure, balancing the needs of reliability and cost. The models that are presented are simple but they do nevertheless cover a large number of practical situations. The book is the outcome of a research project initiated at the Engineering Academy of Denmark and sponsored jointly by the Danish Council of Technology and a number of Danish manufacturing companies within the electronics and electromechanical industry. About the Author
About the authors-- Finn Jensen is an independent consultant in reliability engineering. He received his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1962 and his Ph.D. in 1970 from the Technical University of Denmark. He has been concerned with practical reliability engineering and research since the early 1970s, forming his own company in 1973. As reliability adviser he has conducted numerous reliability short courses in industry and has published and presented papers at many national and international conferences. Niels Erik Petersen graduated from the Engineering Academy of Denmark in 1976 and specializes in electromechanical engineering. Mr Petersen worked extensively on reliability problems, especially burn-in techniques, before taking up his present position as Development Engineer within a Danish company specializing in heavy industrial machinery.

"Burn-in" by Finn Jensen and Niels Erik Petersen. Sub-titled: "An Engineering Approach To The Design And Analysis Of Burn-in Procedures". John Wiley & Sons, 1986.
The main purpose of this book is to provide an organized approach to the development and implementation of a burn-in program. This book does give you the basics in developing burn-in, that is the application of elevated temperature to cause latent defects to fail at the manufacturing plant rather than to have the unit fail during use by the Customer. The book, however, is truly a rather complete text in reliability, dealing with the three stages of a product: infant mortality, useful life and wear out.
I have used this book over the past decade or so, and taken portions of the text for proposals, when a project was just beginning, and, at the other end, used the text for Weibull functions to ascertain the end-of-life of a product. It is an excellent book, describing reliability principles far more clearly than some other fundamental texts.
I received this book at a burn-in seminar taught by Dr. Finn Jensen. Dr. Jensen is a slight, bubbly man, whose English is impeccable. At the seminar, he fleshed out the examples in the book with details and anecdotes showing that the book, "Burn-In", is grounded on a wealth of real-life experience. If you buy one book on burn-in, or on reliability, this is the one.

A no-nonsense approach

This book emphasizes a no-nonsense approach to burn in and is suitable for the experienced engineer who is faced with difficult questions about test and reliability. It is fast paced and avoids excessive advanced statistical analysis to achive an engineering result that is adequate 90% of the time.
First time users of burnin technology will want to familiarize themselves with the statistics of failure analysis before advancing onto a burn-in plan.
The book may also appeal to senior manufacturing line personnel who have witnessed first hand experiences in burn-in and wish to pursue further the cause and effect relationship. Using the methodologies outlined within, production line resources can be maximized for yield and quality.
The read is enjoyable and refreshing - without sidetracking - It dives right into the topic at hand and plows through to a solution and implementation plan.

They'll definately take a bite out of you

What does a nice upper class gal named Sheila and a hood named Nico, whose companion is called knuckles, have to do with each other. They're part of the imaginative story presented by Ana Jobrail. She weaves a story of a young woman who descends into a world of illegal dealings and possible death.

Once again my only complaint is that Ms. Jobrail's stories are too short.

Along the way, Ana confronts a host of cultural assumptions about beauty, marriage and a woman's role in society. Although Real Women Have Curves is Lopez' most recognized work, it is only one of many literary and artistic works she has created since her artistic career began at 17. Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in 1969, Josefina Lopez was five years old when she and her family immigrated to the United States and settled in the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Josefina was undocumented for thirteen years before she received Amnesty in 1987 and eventually became a U.S. Citizen in 1995. Josefina has been an activist and has been doing public speaking for over 20 years and has lectured on various topics including Chicano Theater, Women's History Issues, Minority representation in Cinema at over 200 universities such as Yale, Darmouth, and USC. She also has a magazine column called "Ask A Wise Latina". She has been the subject of countless TV & Radio interviews in which she has passionately discussed immigration issues and other controversial subjects concerning women and minorities. Josefina is the recipient of a number of other awards and accolades, including a formal recognition from U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer's 7th Annual "Women Making History" banquet in 1998; and a screenwriting fellowship from the California Arts Council in 2001. She and Real Women Have Curves co-author George LaVoo won the Humanitas Prize for Screenwriting in 2002, The Gabriel Garcia Marquez Award from L.A. Mayor in 2003, and the Artist-in-Residency grant from the NEA/TCG for 2007. Josefina is presently developing the musical version of Real Women Have Curves. Her first novel titled Hungry Woman in Paris came out last spring. She wrote a play to protest SB1070 titled Detained in the Desert, which she is currently making into a film. She is working on her next novel Summer of San Miguel and opening a cultural center in Boyle Heights where she plans to continue celebrating women and Latinos!
