HOOK

What’s a screenplay? Good question. After all, if you’re going to write one, you ought to know the answer. Right?

You probably already know an answer. A screenplay is writing intended to be turned into film. It’s a hundred-odd pages held together by brass brads, in which you have written down whatever you want the audience to see and hear in your movie.

If it gets made, the director will come up with a whole new vision, the actors will change your dialogue, the editor will concoct another way to order the scenes, and it won’t be "your movie" any more. That’s okay. A screenplay is not a complete work. It is not intended to be appreciated on its own. If a movie were a building, a screenplay would be the blueprint. Nobody settles down in front of a roaring fire with her beloved, a bottle of Chianti, and a nice blueprint. Nobody takes a couple of good screenplays out to the beach — outside of show business, anyway.

That means there is no point writing a screenplay if it isn’t going to get produced.

We all know that, somewhere in the back of our minds, but most of the thousands of screenplays I’ve read in ten years as a development executive were never in any danger of being made into a movie. From the moment the writer conceived them, they were doomed. They may have been well-crafted or poorly crafted, but they were all missing what they needed in order to get made.

This book is about writing movies that get made. Not just popular movies. Art films get made, too. Writing a screenplay that will make a brilliant movie is a good part of writing a movie that will get made, and that’s what most of this book is about. But that’s not all of it. So it’s important to understand what else a screenplay is, if you’re going to go to all the trouble of writing one, because if you don’t, the odds are you’re wasting your time.

The Business of the Craft

It's show business, folks. And in Alex Epstein's book, "Crafty Screenwriting" the emphasis is on the word "business". As someone who has been a development executive, Epstein reminds writers of the bigger picture: a screenplay is just one element in a deal. The screenplay doesn't get made until other elements come together in a package that includes a producer, a director and the star and serious money. He urges the aspiring screenwriter to write his story with the goal of making it an effective selling tool, a catalyst to getting a deal done. Otherwise the chances of the script actually seeing the projector light in the darkness of a movie theater are slim to none.

And how to make the script an effective sales tool? First, says Epstein, it needs a great hook. A hook is the concept of the story in a nutshell that grabs attention and makes people want to know how it turns out. The marketing people come up with hooks called taglines to grab your attention when a movie is released. You need to come up with a hook to grab the attention of a Hollywood player to get the movie made.

Quite bluntly, Epstein says, "If your story does not have a hook, you are probably wasting your time writing the screenplay."

So, how to come up with a hook? Epstein offers some suggestions, but like everything else in the creative process, there is no sure-fire formula. After the hook he discusses the title - "Your title is the most important phrase in your entire script", the pitch, the query letter. At the end of the book is a chapter on getting an agent, getting copyright protetion for your work plus two appendices, one a sample option deal, the other a sample of screenplay pages properly formatted.

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing the nuts and bolts of writing: plot, characters, action, dialogue, etc. Along the way he tilts at a few windmills: one section is titled "The Myth of the Three-Act Structure."

Does Epstein have any new gems of insight about them that haven't been revealed in a dozen other books? Not really, but if I had to recommend books on the particular topics of character, action and dialogue, this book would make my short list. Because he discusses the tried and true clearly and succintly with occasional twists of thought and turns of phrase that cast the tried and true in a new light in this reader's mind. And throughout his discussion, he never loses sight of the goal: punching up the script to make it a more marketable property. As the subtitle of the book says: "Writing Movies That Get Made" -- not just written.

If you're interested in writing scripts as vessels in which to pour your heart, your soul, your unappreciated genius, the ultimate truth of being that only you comprehend -- this book isn't for you. But if you subscribe to the notion that screenwriting is a business as well as a craft, then this is a book you will profit from.

Simply put - I'm glad I bought this book.

I'm completely new to the "craft" of screenwriting, and I think there's nothing wrong with a book that starts at square one for people like me. I think the book is well-written, and it seems to have been carefully proofread and edited (you'd be surprised by the mistakes I've found in other books). I like how Epstein talks about both the business side of writing and selling screenplays as well as the actual skills and strategies you need to write them. I need to know about both. He makes his points clearly and concisely - he doesn't use five pages to say something that can be said on one page. Makes for a quicker read, without sacrificing information.

Specifically, Epstein covers these topics:

1. Coming up with a "Hook," an exciting idea that can grab the attention of both show business people and audiences.

2. Working out your Plot.

3. Developing your Characters.

4. Writing Action into your scenes.

5. Crafting appropriate screenplay Dialogue.

6. Understanding different movie Genres.

7. Getting writing Help as you learn to improve your scripts.

8. Rewriting and rewriting until you get a great script.

9. Getting your script made into a movie by working with agents, development execs, producers, and the general business of Hollywood.

I read a criticism on one of the previous reviews that pretty much disparages Epstein for only having one writing credit in movies. I don't know what that person's copy of Crafty Screenwriting says, but the cover of my copy reads, "A development executive's real-world approach..." In other words, Epstein never claims you should listen to him because he's a super-accomplished writer with many credits. But he is a development executive. And it's very important to know how development executives think and what they want to see in screenplays. So I think his opinion is valuable.

When I first decided to pursue screenwriting, I thought I had the right idea of how I should proceed and how show business worked. Turns out I was wrong on both counts! If you're just starting out, and you want to know the basics of the business of movie development and the foundations of screenwriting theory, I absolutely recommend this book. But get some highlighters! There's a lot to learn!

Wish I'd had this book in film school

Finally, a book about screenwriting that isn't drudgery to read. When I was a film student, the screenwriting books I was assigned made the whole process seem more arcane than French grammar. Epstein's book is about how to tell stories that people will want to see on the screen, and reading it is like talking to a very smart, funny person.
He's absolutely right about how scripts need to have a hook to get made, and he explains for the uninitiated how those occasional movies without hooks actually got made (by being a bestselling novels first, being the pet project of a movie star, etc.)
Buy this book. It's a fun read, and it will help you figure out what's wrong with your screenplay (and will save you endless hours of frustration if your hook-less story is doomed to be unproducable).

I love this book and use it all the time

I love this book. I have started collecting the "proper" glasses for the different types of beer. it's fun to have company come over and serve beer in different glasses and have a little knowledge of why I'm serving it the glass.

Mildly informative; poorly written

Well, if we are going off just the pictures, then this book gets a positive review from me. Unfortunately I actually wanted to read the book. I have my doubts that the author of the book is either a writer or a knowledgeable beer enthusiast. In fact, at one point he states that the information about glasses was obtained from his own online research and by talking to people at the beer store he frequents. Good grief.

To add insult to injury, he is a terrible writer and sometimes crafts (no pun intended) sentences that make absolutely no sense. Here is an actual sentence from this book: "Craft beers have had their ups and downs over the past 20 years or so, but it is apparent that it is going nowhere but up lately with the diversity of types of beers and sales are constantly growing." Uh... What? Maybe the proofreader had a few too many craft beers and didn't catch that one. The worst part about the book is how a lot of the information is presented like it's a Power Point slide show for a college assignment. Occasionally facts will be given but he won't elaborate on them or explain them so I'm left clueless about WHY bock beers helped skirt around the fasting rules of Lent. Damned if he's gonna explain it to me.

All in all, there's probably something useful in this book for you, whether it be the pretty pictures or the suggestion of what style glass to use for your beers. But if you're hoping to become a beer genius when you're done reading it, then I hate to break it to you but you're going to need to consult Wikipedia to fill in the gaps.

What fun to have the book to go with the glasses I had bought my husband for Father's Day. We use one of more of the glasses every night and are now having fun reading about the glass we chose for the beer we were having with dinner. Great set! Those Christmas gift ideas are a-churning!!

Belongs on Every Shelf

This book is another outstanding contribution by Susan Wise Bauer. It walks you through the development of scientific thought and discovery through the ages, with pointers to where to find accessible copies of the primary source documents, and tips on what to get from reading them-- including a website with links to free copies and excerpts of the primary sources where available. This book belongs on the shelf for any individual who would like a better grounding in where our major western scientific ideas come from, how they impacted other scientists, and how scientists build upon the work of others, whether that means confirming a theory or moving ideas in a new direction. Homeschoolers with high school students will also love this book, no matter what style of homeschooling is practiced; it is not a book only for classical homeschoolers. I already have plans for a high school level philosophy of science course, and my 14 year old has been sneaking the book off to read parts of it. He knows our course from it will be a couple of years away yet, but it was just too enticing.

Excellent starting point for exploring great science writing of the past.

This book is not so much about the history of science, it is about the great writings of science, looking at the key writings since the time of Aristotle. Author Susan Wise Bauer encourages the reader to explore the original works and specifies where the reader can find them. This is excellent as the advice is very specific and not something general such as “look online.” I found the discussion fascinating and it has tempted me to find these old works. Ultimately, this book is about the history of science and it is excellent. And unlike a lot of history of science books, it covers biology as well. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in exploring these old writings but don’t know where to start. Bauer writes in a conversational manner and the science is easy to understand so I can recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of science.

Everything has a history. Science and scientists are no exception. Bauer tells the most well-known stories in science and the most famous scientists and thinkers from contributions by people close to the scientists. Thu,s Galileo refuted Aristotle's view that heavy objects can only fall to the ground at the same time as lighter ones only if they fell from a greater height. Galileo's discoveries and thoughts also had an immense impact on Newton; and Newton himself, excelled after his feud with Robert Hooke and the Royal Society over his discovery that colours are merely refracted light - Hooke claimed that Newton had stolen his ideas. Similarly, the discovery of the structure of the DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson (and Rosalind Franklin) might not have taken place if Crick had not been goaded by Watson to ignore English conventions and stayed away from this field of study because another Englishman (Maurice Wilkins) had already started on it.

Bauer's account of the race between Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace to the publication of their theories of evolution is, in comparison to the full stories of both men in their many biographies, a short but exciting story that is one of the most pulsating races of all time. And can a book of this nature overlook the 'Big Bang'? Certainly not. The story of the universe is told from the lenses of Edwin Hubble who began with the speculation that when we look into the cosmos we might be seeing not just stars but 'clusters of galaxies'.

History and the universe is a complex web. We may not yet have the ultimate answer - if there is one - but Bauer has given us a rich little book to take with us on our contemplative journey.

Suskind's previous novel, Perfume, was a tough act to follow, so perhaps he deliberately curbed his aspirations for its successor. Where Perfume was a rich feast of language and vision, this slim novella is a light snack, a simple fable simply wrought. After a childhood marked by repeated abandonment, followed by years devoted to cultivating the lifestyle of an urban hermit, Parisian bank guard Jonathan Noel awakes one morning to find the titular bird outside the door of his rented one-room flat, the presence of which so unnerves him over the course of the day, that he finally goes to sleep vowing to commit suicide the next morning. Redemption comes at daybreak in the form of a rainstorm and the realization that, despite the sadness of his early years, he "cannot live without other people." Like the monster scent-stealer of Perfume, Noel is an extreme example of a social outcast, but despite a few nice toucheshe recognizes his first rush of adrenaline as something he has read abouthis characterization lacks the inventiveness of the former. The verbal flights of fancy that dazzled in Perfume are missing here, although that book's less interesting allegorical affinities remain. A rewarding, subtle work.

Imagine you are an old man so afraid of life that you have spent most of your years alone, living in a small room and working in an insignificant job as a security guard on the front steps of a bank, your only pleasure somehow derived from the monotony of your daily routine. Then one day a living creature, a pigeon, appears unexpectedly on your doorstep, and it shouldn't be there--it is out of place. And this frightens you like nothing has in many years. You flee your apartment (for good, you think). Because of your agitated state you break your own routines; you begin acting strangely, and your perceptions alter. This sets off a chain reaction of encounters in which you, despite your lifelong precautions to the contrary, begin interacting with a world that seems determined to drive you over the edge.
Suskind's "The Pigeon" is subtly meticulous in depicting its protagonist's complex psychological journey. The story is at once free of sentimentality, raw, honest, and yet life-affirming in the most vital sense. While it is reminiscent of Kafka and--most notably--of Knut Hamson's "Hunger," Suskind's novella also manages to glimpse something just around the corner, something almost out of sight, beyond the valley of despair.

Short and satisfying

The central achievement of S�skind's novella is the way it articulates the social anxiety of a man whose childhood fear of abandonment has played out as a lifetime of limited scope, controlling routines and self-imposed isolation. That might sound heavy but it isn't - mainly because S�skind wisely chooses the "free indirect" narrative style (mastered by Henry James). The story is told in the third person, but is nevertheless filtered through Jonathan Noel's gaze and consciousness so that external reality exists only as refracted in his mind. The result is that we see the world as he sees it, but without the unreliability that such a point of view entails. S�skind is thereby able to show us precisely what he wants us to see - both the horror and humour of Noel's experience - and to deliver a climax which remains somewhat objective and thereby inspires hope. Other reviewers seem to have found the ending cloying and unrealistic, but I think they're assuming more than S�skind suggests. Noel and his life are not utterly transformed at the end - he has an epiphany, he loses his fear, but it may or may not last.

Oh man, we need more from Suskind.

I had to get a copy of The Pigeon used after reading Perfume. I read it in one sitting. It's such a gem. I don't know how many pages go by where the main character is just standing in front of this bank thinking, not doing anything. It's riveting. He eats a meal towards the end of the book and I've never read such tasty descriptions of food. And rain, and peeing in the tub, and ripping your pants in public.
I'm going to have to do some searching to get my Patrick Suskind fix. This is one of the most satisfying books I've ever read. It left me on a high for a couple weeks. It's since worked it's way somewhere deep in me, I won't forget it.

The true obsessive Marxist can find better, more doting treatment elsewhere, but the beginning film buff will find solid background material, well-researched biogs on the Brothers, and serviceable summaries of the film plots. Out-of-date, but a good additin to a research collection if found

What a great book!

I've known about this book by Kyle Crichton since the early 1970s but had never seen it in any libraries (it was published in 1950 so not likely to show up in any bookstores). So delighted to see so many different copies available on Amazon. This copy is perfect. It's a hard-cover first edition, but because it was used the price was a lot lower than some others that were being offered. The book has tons of fascinating background about the Marx Brothers, both personally and professionally, as well as a number of outstanding historical/archival photos of this one-of-a-kind family of comedians/movie actors/TV and radio stars who started in vaudeville and burlesque, then worked their way up to the Broadway stage and, from there, into film. They occupy a special place in American comedy lore, and this book is the first definitive book about them ever to appear. What a great book, and a fortunate find for me.
