About the Author
Kenneth A. Kroos has a B.S., M.S., and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toledo. He taught for five years at Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, served as Student Section Advisor and Chair of the Memphis-Mid-south Section of ASME. Dr. Kroos joined Villanova University in 1982, teaching courses thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and several others. He serves as Assistant Department Chair for the Mechanical Engineering Department, has authored more than fifteen publications in the fields of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, engineering education and computer graphics for flow visualization, performed research in computer graphics for the U. S. Army Ballistics Research Lab, and consulted for a number of companies in the Memphis and Philadelphia areas. Dr. Kroos is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He served as Vice President of ASME in 2001 and served a three year term on the Council for Member Affairs.

Dr. Merle C. Potter holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Michigan Technological University, as well as an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Michigan. Dr. Potter taught for 40 years, including 33 of years at Michigan State University where he taught thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and numerous other courses. Dr. Potter has authored and co-authored 35 textbooks, help books, and engineering exam review books. He has specialized in fluid flow stability and energy research. He has received numerous awards, including the Ford Faculty Scholarship, the Teacher-Scholar Award, the ASME Centennial Award, the MSU Mechanical Engineering Faculty Award, and the James Harry Potter Thermodynamics Gold Medal. Dr. Potter is a member of ASEE, ASME, and the American Academy of Mechanics.

Translating customer input into value

Agile development tells us that we have to get out and talk to customers. No surprise there; poor customer input has always been a primary cause of product dysfunction. But how, exactly, should we be doing it? And what do we do with the information once we get it? Two of the sections I liked best were on creating business models and crafting effective sales messages. Customers don't just tell you want they want (usually they don't know, and anyway, they don't understand the technology the way engineers do) and products don't just sell themselves. This book shows you how to translate customer input into value propositions and differentiated messages, using structured and proven processes.

The book also lucidly explains why low cost cannot be a primary selling strategy in today's world. It also has a very interesting perspective on four market risk hotspots -all in context of today's technology savvy customers.

Over-all, I found that the book not only explains various concepts in a simple yet structured way but also articulates in a practical tone in present day context -which makes it very very relevant. There are not very many good books on new product development, but this is one that should be added to any business library.

While developers are technical in their training, he recognizes that most critical success factors for new products are related to market based issues. Using decades of industry best practices and principles he pinpoints what needs to remain in focus and why. With the advent of techniques like Agile development, developers can no longer afford to be disengaged from customers. Missed market signals are more than dangerous. Organizations that learn to listen to customers and apply these principles, will simply do better. This book is an easy read, it is practical, conversational, and well-researched; and meant for anyone involved in new product development infrastructure. An awesome cookbook with great science and practical tips for any dedicated home cook. Recipes require cooking from scratch but the extra few minutes will produce grand results. I have discovered most recipes turn out very well except a few of their grilling recipes. Over and above, buy your book here and beware of the scam of ordering through the PBS advertised sight that has a much lower price. If you buy the book there, that vendor will send you additional books at list prices and demand payment.

Having watched America's Test Kitchen, I thought this would be a nice addition to the cookbooks on my shelf. I did not realize (until I received it) what an awesome resource this is! This cookbook is exceptional. Why? Beside the fact that it is jammed packed with recipes, each recipe has a "Why This Recipe Works Summary." So many helpful hints that I was unaware of (and this after cooking for over 30 years). There are helpful hints as to how they revised recipes so that they were healthier, without sacrificing taste. Honestly, I don't think I will have to search the internet again looking for recipes, or what to make for dinner. I love this cookbook - and plan to buy one for each of my children. With the exception of my cookbook that I got from my mother as a teenager, the others will have to find new homes.

The ONLY cookbook you'll ever need!

This is an excellent cookbook if you like simple, good, everyday food. It explains WHY each recipe is good, which is surprisingly helpful.
It's super-easy to read and follow the directions. The only downside is that it is quite big and super HEAVY, but I guess there's no way getting around that.

It's too easy in an English course to limit one's understanding of romanticism to the Anglo-American versions of it. This informative, interesting book provides essential background information as to the roots of romanticism which developed in Europe.

Certainly informative, but unnecessarily loquacious. One cannot help but wonder if Ferber could not have been equally as insightful with half as many words (especially for a book with the preface 'a very short introduction'). Not truly 'fun' to read, yet it delivers all it out promises.
