Alanbrooke was CIGS - Chief of the Imperial General Staff - for the greater part of the Second World War. He acted as mentor to Montgomery and military adviser to Churchill, with whom he clashed. As chairman of the Chiefs of Staff committee he also led for the British side in the bargaining and the brokering of the Grand Alliance, notably during the great conferences with Roosevelt and Stalin and their retinue at Casablanca,Teheran, Malta and elsewhere. As CIGS Alanbrooke was indispensable to the British and the Allied war effort. The diaries were sanitised by Arthur Bryant for his two books he wrote with Alanbrooke. Unexpurgated, says Danchev, they are explosive. The American generals, in particular, come in for attack. Danchev proposes to centre his edition on the Second World War. Pre and post-war entries are to be reduced to a Prologue and Epilogue). John Keegan says they are the military equivalent of the Colville Diaries (Churchill's private secretary), THE FRINGES OF POWER. These sold 24,000 in hardback at Hodder in 1985.

The Unexpurgated Diaries

This book details everything left out of earlier biographies. We learn his true attitudes about Winston Churchill, the good and the bad, and also about Eisenhower, Montgomery, Alexander, Roosevelt, George Marshall, and others. He had little use for most of the American officers' military skills, but Eisenhower rose in his esteem over time. This book is a necessity for scholars about World War II. For instance, Alanbrooke notes that FDR was urging an early date for the landing in North Africa in large part to help the Democratic Party in the election of November 1942, and it gives rise to the question how much that election had to do with the Allies choosing to invade North Africa. (It was planned to begin earlier than it did, but had to be postponed repeatly for lack of boats, or the weather, etc. It did not finally occur until a few days after the election, in which the Democrats lost dozens of House seats as FDR had feared)... There are not many places the scholar can learn all the facts that Alanbrooke knew, least of all in his 40-year earlier biography based on selected parts of the same diaries. This is vastly better.

This is the first "true" Diary I've read of a ...

This is the first "true" Diary I've read of a wartime leader. I find myself reading fast over periods I know are slow. I welcome the insights. I'll admit I was biased against Alanbrooke before reading this but came away with a greater appreciaton of him - even though I disagree with many of his insights - especially about American officers.

Fantastic Primary Source

Field Marshall Alanbrooke was one of Churchill's closest confidants during the war. He explains how he had to keep Churchill in check, as "...he had ten ideas for new operations each day, only one of which was good, and he didn't know which one that was," Alanbrooke was offered what he calls "the finest command" of the Mediterrenean Theatre, but turned it down to stay by Churchill sides. He feared that Churchill's meddling in military operations would prolong the war. What a noble sacrifice from a noble soldier!

Just a great book

There are damn few books being written about Delphi currently which is a total mystery to me as I am sure it far exceeds the popularity of some languages that have shelves devoted to them in brick bookstores. Even if there were scads of Delphi books, this one is a real gem. The level of detail it goes into is just right, its not for rank beginners (most of the Delphi books from the 90s were aimed there) but it wades into each topic gently enough that its a good read. You get a very good examination of the topic under review however and almost everyone will learn something from each chapter I bet.

I have been reading every night before bed and its very hard to put down.

Finally, a mature book on Delphi written since C# was introduced.

This book and Cary Jensen's book on Datasets are the best Delphi publications since the year 2000.

Not the right title

I bought this book after buying Delphi XE4 (and having been away from Delphi - in C - for more than ten years). The title suggested to me an 'upgrade' from my old 'Mastering Delphi 6' book, but I think that 'Foundations' is not quite the right title. Yes you will find Delphi (Pascal) fundamentals, OOP, IO streams, Packages etc, but nothing on VCL or Firemonkey 'foundations'.

While my 'Mastering Delphi 6' still provides most of the Delphi XE4 basics, there some significant additions/changes etc in Delphi XE4, which I found very hard to get information on. In my mind 'Language Basics' and 'OOP review' either do not belong in a book of this title OR all the other significant items (such as controls) need to be covered too.

But don't get me wrong. This is still a great book with much useful information. Carefully 'Look Inside' before you buy and decide if that is what you are looking for when buying a Foundations book.

Excellent book with plenty of detail

We're experienced Delphi developers who are thoroughly familiar with Delphi 2007 and earlier. Moving up to XE3 we thought it might be an idea to buy a book or two for reference and I'm glad we did. (Yes I know the book is XE2 not XE3 but its as close as we could find!).

The book has great coverage of Delphi concepts but what most impressed us was the level of detail it drills down into. New features are explained well but better still there is often a good discussion of opportunities and problems that arise from the new functionality.

Reading the book thoroughly is genuinely useful, not just for learning about newer versions of Delphi but also because of the trial and error time avoided in working out the quirks and best ways of using the new tools.

An excellent reference and resource - A "current classic"

This book is a classic: depth of information over a broad body of knowledge.
The error mentioned by another reviewer appears on p. 488: the "L-bar" term should be squared. Verifying dimensional homogeneity [i.e.that units of measure calculate consistently across the expression and result in "items" {whatever units demand is carried = units of safety stock}]) would alert a reader quickly that the product in the first term is incorrect.

A classic field handbook for manufacturing professionals

This textbook, which has been around for a number of years and has undergone a few revisions, has become the standard preparatory text for APICS tests and college-level production/operations management courses in dozens of universities.
The content is very broad - it covers almost the entire gamut of P/OM topics to some degree. That may be the only drawback to this book: it so broad in its topical coverage that there may be examples where the authors could have gone deeper in their presentation on specific subjects.
But even so, this charactertistic of being "100 miles wide and a few miles deep" works very well for readers who need a comprehensive primer on P/OM. That would include people just entering the field, or those that need to undestand the primary subject matters and areas of study, to point them in new directions.
I highly recommend this book as a foundation reference guide to your business library. Again, I know of many books that may be deeper in specific areas of P/OM, but I know of no book that encompasses so many topics and does and admirable job of presenting those topics. I would also caution the seasoned, highly-read P/OM professional in buying this book, but leave it for those newcomers to the field.

Too wordy and lengthy content to focus the points well

Even if it is taken as the popular textbook for MPC, I'd rather read the another one: "Introduction to the materials management" by Arnold and Chapman. I can not easily catch the points and feel muddled after reading long sections and words in this book. However, the examples and case studies here are worthy to have a big picture for those who are new in this field.
