An old saw about Hollywood has it that if you scrape away the phoney tinsel, you'll find the real tinsel underneath. On the evidence of the would-be hiss-and-tell expos‚ at hand, much the same could be said of Donald Trump, the casino real-estate operator who's now adrift in a sea of financial woes. By the author's evenhanded, knowledgable account, in fact, Trump is a decidedly dull boy whose life story could as easily have been subtitled ``The Banality of Narcissism.'' The son of a top gaming-industry executive, O'Donnell (now 36) grew up in the slot-machine business. A sometime prot‚g‚ of Steve Wynn, he signed on with The Donald's organization in 1987. As chief operating officer at Trump Plaza, O'Donnell was in almost daily contact with his boss. If familiarity did not breed contempt, it eventually led to distaste. Trump at work emerges here as a cocksure boor who pays precious little attention to detail and pins the blame for his own misjudgments on subordinates. While he seems surprisingly dumb when it comes to weighing a deal's downside risks against its potential rewards, he apparently suffers from near- terminal overconfidence. As O'Donnell makes clear, however, his empire was built on an abiding faith in rising property values, an assumption that came a cropper shortly after the Taj Mahal's botched opening. And Trump at play with his yacht, helicopter, and other trophies is an equally unappealing eminence. Incredible accounting of how "the donald' rationalizes his misbehavior.....I'm mostly taken with how he treated the 2 year old Kentucky thoroughbred for his moment of satisfaction for his Japanese clients, forcing the horse to be galloped in training against the advise of his trainer, which resulted in the horse breaking down....AND then because it broke down 'the donald' refused to pay the $50,000 deposit on the purchase price.........he is truly the Disposable Donald.........sad......

Pathetic man

What bothered me most about this revelation of the true Trump is his disdain for the common man, and the elderly people in his Casinos that he wouldn't give the right time of day, and who he cursed when they were out of ear-shot. But it doesn't surprise me. Trump sneers at everyone who won't kiss his feet. I think Trump is going to be in for a big surprise on Judgment Day, when he finds out who the real God is, and it turns out not to be him. Sad story of a pathetic man and his pathetic life.

It reads partially like a soap opera and partially like a business book

I bought this book, which was published in 1991, a few years ago as a closeout at the dollar store, and found it fascinating. It reads partially like a soap opera and partially like a business book. But now, it has new relevance, for obvious reasons. It ought to be put back in print. If you are interested in the REAL Donald Trump, don't read "The Art of the Deal," find a used copy of this book on Amazon and read it. You will definitely gain insight into Trump. Plus, this book is truly entertaining, even though it is describing events from almost 25 years ago.

Outstanding contribution in a crowded fitness industry

As the title suggests, this book is very specifically targeted to people who have a hard time gaining muscle with exercise. It is not specifically a strength training program, and it is not a conditioning program. The emphasis is on avoiding the things that work for elite bodybuilders or work best for lifting more weight and on avoiding the mess of internet marketing hype, and instead focusing on the principles that work best for people who gain muscle very slowly and with great difficulty.

The program is based on training the entire body in each workout in a sustainable way to get enough stimulation for muscle development without taxing the limited recovery capacity of the hard gainer.

The way this is approached to go back to basics with the the concepts: (1) muscles are recruited by the nervous system not by the weights, (2) learning how you should feel from training is more important for stimulating your muscles properly than watching for strength targets, and (3) eating properly for gaining muscle is not a matter of bulking up or special diets, it is a matter of getting enough nutrition to recover properly from training.

The way the program accomplishes these basics is by using a strategy of high repetition complexes per body part at a very deliberate cadence to train the entire body in each workout so that you get enough stimulation to encourage muscle growth without exceeding your capacity to recover.

The program allows for exercises to be swapped out with similar ones and for different variations of repetitions and weight progressions within a session, but not varying the overall range of repetitions for each exercise. The specific repetition ranges used and hitting the body parts according to the "peripheral heart action" principle are the central hard rules of the program. The program is not intended for fast results in the short term, it is intended for reliable results in the longer term, and the author suggests a one year commitment to the program. The Kindle book contains lists of exercises, and provides links to a printable PDF for convenience and to videos of the exercises.

This seems like a very solid approach to gaining muscle compared to most of the heavily co-marketed and over-hyped programs I've seen available on the web. This is not a program of magical fast results, fad techniques, superficial sciencey citations, or mixed objectives. This is a program and set of principles very specifically intended to go back to the simple goal of putting muscle on people who have failed at that goal consistently in the past.

The only thing I found to be a negative here was that it isn't easy to actually do this program without a lot of work if you aren't already an experienced lifter or a coach. It will help a lot if you are already familiar with weight training because this is not a primer on how to exercise. There is nothing preventing a novice from using the associated videos to help learn the exercises and the design of the program is all about learning as much as it is about training. But I am hoping to adapt some of these principles to my bodyweight training for example, and that seems like it will take a bit of thought and a learning curve. I think it will be well worth it though.

I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and have been following Scott Abel's programs, blogs, forum and some of his books since an undergraduate. Throughout I can say that everything he does and says can be backed up by high level research if he hasn't already provided it and the sources for you, most of the sources are from graduate level textbooks and peer reviewed journals. I merely pull up the sources to trust, but verify. You have to question things, I just want to tell the reader that this has been done and that you can trust him and the quality of his products. I can say that any of his products are worth well more than what he charges.
When you combine this dedication to quality along with his priceless years of experience and Coaching and you are provided with what could be called evidence based practice or evidence based training.
The only reason I placed my job title at the beginning of the review is because I fear that someone might pass this or another Scott Abel product up for something else and if the title helps then it's worth it. I hope this lends support to the reader, if the other fantastic reviews of support have not already, to the fact that Scott's training, experience and know-how are supported by sound physiologic and muscluloskeletal science and research.

The information and knowledge that Scott Abel provides is fantastic! But the workouts he provides are difficult to perform in a busy commercial gym. There are many super set / giant set type workouts (called complexes) that require different types of equipment (i.e. seated cable flyes/ leg extensions) to be used in succession without a break. In my gym, these pieces of equipment are not near each other and the rule is, generally, once you're off a piece of equipment someone else can take it - and usually does.

Teen won't talk?

Our communication with our teen usually consists of her blaming us for her life and then storming off to her room. So I was a little doubtful when I bought this book, not to mention desparate. One day after dinner I announced we were playing the question game. My daughter spent half an hour asking us questions from the book, and even answered a few. It was a nice break from the usual communication and gave us some interesting insights into her thoughts. I recommend it for even the worst cases.

Dinner time and road trips are fun with this book. The questions lead to great conversations that I may not have had with my chldren otherwise. The questions for parents can sometimes be tough, which is probably why my oldest loves to ask them. It is geared for children of a junior high school age or older, yet my four year old enjoys playing as well. If you have a tough time getting more than one or two word responses when talking to your children - this book is for you. Not only will it help you to get to know children's thoughts a feelings a little better they get to know you better too.

An Entertaining Way to Revive Family Conversations!

My brother-in-law pulled this book out after a family dinner, with three generations present: grandparents, two sets of parents, two kids (teen through college-age) and a friend. We passed the book around several times with each person picking anyone at the table to ask a question to.
It proved to be a highly entertaining evening, ranging from the hilarious to the historic to true confessions.
In this day when our culture seems to have lost the art of conversation, this book would be an excellent way to revive meaningful interaction within families. I recommend this book, but be careful, you might be asked an embarrassing question or two!

Abigail Flesch Connors has been an early childhood arts specialist for over twenty years. She is the author of the award-winning 101 Rhythm Instrument Activities for Young Children and Teaching Creativity: Supporting, Valuing, and Inspiring Young Children s Creative Thinking. She firmly believes in the importance of the arts to the development of the whole child. Abby holds a B.A. in Music from Manhattanville College and an M.A. in Education from the University of Connecticut. Abby has presented workshops on early childhood arts education and rhythm instruments for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the New Jersey Association for the Education of Young Children (NJAEYC), the New Jersey Music Educators Association, and other groups. She lives with her family in Piscataway, New Jersey.
