Bob Bergin's Flying Giger Novel

I have the benefit of a friendship with the author that enabled me to hear these stories directly from many of his distinguished AVG friends. They were all charming gentlemen, highly articulate, vivid in their recollections and poignant in their speech. They told as good a tale as Bob Bergin tells in this book, which itself is a great story that captures much of the history and a good deal of the personalities of the key players involved - the characterizations of Ed Rector, Chennault, Chou En-Lai are particularly sharply drawn in my view.

What I thought the book captured with great skill was the vacuum created by a war situation, a war at the outset before too many dishes have been broken, before the true dimensions of the conflict, and the real zeal of the contestants, has been revealed. Bob writes in a way that conveyed the sense of a brewing conflict at the point when people are still adjusting to political realities acted out in capital cities, and new forces are positioning themselves for advantage on the fields that will be the center of the coming contest.

Commerce was still possible, though new "rules" were being negotiated and alternatives to the normal course of business were being worked out. Relationships across borders were fluid, and old grudges/lingering historic animosities were bubbling to the surface.

Bob also accurately renders the somewhat confused situation confronting those in the business of intelligence collection in such a context, and does a very nice job depicting the murky context in which the newly built OSS had to function upon establishment. Targets had not yet emerged with clarity. National level priorities were broad, and vague, and provided only the sketchiest guidance to people on the ground. Opportunities led down many paths, and a good number of dead ends loomed large. Hours and hours spent in tedium punctuated by moments of terror.

Great story. Nice fit with the earlier volumes that dealt with more contemporary situations.

Meet the Flying Tigers

"Spies In The Garden: A Novel of War and Espionage" by Bob Bergin takes place during the Japanese invasion of Burma and China. The book centers on the actions of the Flying Tigers (the American Volunteer Group). The book provides a good history of the Flying Tigers wrapped around the story.

The author knows the history of the Flying Tigers. I enjoyed his description of the pilots and their actions. The story begins in November 1941. The fictional hero, Harry Ross, is an American spy working undercover as a writer. He witnesses their early training. The training has with disaster after disaster. The Flying Tigers improve as the story advances into a force feared by the Japanese. Bob Bergin leaves no doubt that he views their performance as far better to the British Royal Air Force.

The narrative commences in Rangoon. Here Ross makes contact with the Flying Tigers. Ross also meets father and daughter Louie and Lucy. Louie is a trader. He supplied lavishness goods to the Chinese Nationalist leaders. Daughter Lucy is stylish and classy as well as beautiful. She and Harry become platonic friends.

Bergin tells a good story. Harry always seems to get out of the jams he encounters. His relationships with Sue and then Tai Li provide information for his work. He receives a Shanghai girl as a reward from Tai Li. She is in bed with the enemy and provides her pillow talk with the Japanese officers to Harry. This endures Harry with his superiors.

By July 1942, the Flying Tigers are winding down. Chennault becomes a Brigadier General. He finds himself working under General Joe Stilwell. We experience the differences between them. We also encounter the differences between the different arms of the Intelligence Services.

Harry does not seem to comprehend all that is happening and its consequences. Ross' controller Doyle steers him and cautions him about getting caught up with politics.

We are left to contemplate what happens next as the book concludes with the end of the Flying Tigers in July 1942.

There is a final two-page wrap up at the end of the book - "What Became of Them?" It gives a brief winding up of the unanswered questions.

Bob Bergin knows the Flying Tigers. He tells a good story from an American point of view. If you like war, espionage, seduction, and intrigue this book is for you. Moreover, do not be surprised if you learn about the Flying Tigers along the way. I recommend buying the book. Mr. Bergin gives a good story and history of the Flying Tigers for your financial investment.

Still questioning Spirituality or confused as to how to explain it?

This is an Excellent book for the Novice, Aleyo, Spiritualist, self proclaimed experts and so on. Why? Because it is simply a collection of Historical Truth and extremely effective songs and prayers. Sancista Brujo Luis has painstakingly taken the time to elaborate the Discernible truth regarding the Spirit world. If you have a lover, family member, friend or colleague who questions your Spirituality and you are not quite sure on how to explain it, this Book is your answer. If after reading one does not understand then it is reasonable to think they are almost a lost cause. The Information provided is not dogmatic nor engrossed in a dictatorship style of leadership. This is simply the Honest and simplest truth to begin and also continue the practice of Spiritism. Please Understand that this book is merely an introduction with full explanation not an end all to Spiritual wisdom and understanding. This book is not a step by step guide on how to conduct a misa or become a medium. It is a guide to Understand what it is to conduct a misa, become a medium and so on. The Heart of every Religion is based upon Spirituality. This book will help you increase your connection with YOUR OWN SPIRITUAL COURT. faith hope and charity

Clarified many issues, nice that the 1/3 of the book is prayers but would prefer he included it in english. Many spelling errors could use a better editor. Hope the author will continue to write and share to help preserve the tradition of espiritismo and sanse. Not really a handbook for developing mediums skills more about the spiritist cultural philosophy and religious practice.

As a client of Sancista Brujo Luis and a follower on his Facebook page, I was intrigued to learn he had wrote "Luz y Progresso,"� a manuel for developing mediums. Although I am not a medium, or initiate of Espiritismo Criollo or Sanse, I have studied world religions, specifically in the Caribbean. For that reason,� I decided to purchase the book, to understand the basic construct of Espiritismo Criollo and how spectators such as myself can understand the basic premise of the religion.�

Luz y Progresso starts with an explanation of Allen Kardec and his role in Espiritismo criollo. Sancista Luis,� explains Kardec's role in the religion and how his doctrine was initiated, while at the same time explains how it applies in present day misas. As a person who has attended Spiritual Feast Day Misas, Coronaciones, and Levantamiento de Causas, I found this intriguing. For starters, I am better able to understand why Kardec's literary work is used at the beginning of each misa, regardless of the type of gathering. I always wondered why a European man's literary work was used in spiritual gatherings of indigenous a Taino and African belief system. Sancista explains the premise, regardless of the belief system the prayers are utilized to protect the mediums and guests from unwanted negative spirits, while only allowing spirits of the mediums own court and spirits of light, to participate in the gathering. I found this aspect intresting because it set a structure to the belief system, unifying the circle of mediums in a common goal that only spirits of light and elevated spritits, will participate in this ceremony. As a spectator in the misas, I observed that once the ceremony had commenced no spirits were allowed to mount until the prayers were finished. Incredibly Practical

Ten bucks doesn't seem to be enough! I am always searching for great material on the family and I have found a resource I will use over and over again.
As the pastor of a contemporary church, I am continually faced with contemporary social problems - like the disintegration of the family. Dr. Gary Chapman does a great job of tackling the huge and broad arena of family relationships. I don't want to give away the entire book, but here are the five signs (maybe it will whet your appetite): 1. An Attitude of Service 2. Intimacy Between Husband and Wife 3. Parents Who Teach and Train 4. Children Who Obey and Honor Parents 5. Husbands Who Are Loving Leaders
If your family needs a boost, order this book! If I could afford it (and if I knew they would read it), I would buy a copy for every family I know.

Best book I've read to make your family stronger

I thought the family I grew up in was a somewhat functional family. Parents were 1950's "yuppies" with two boys and two girls. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that we were six strangers living under one roof. We never shared our ideas, dreams, hopes, feelings or anything. Although we traveled to Maine every summer to stay with my grandparents, we never did anything with or for each other. We each lived our separate lives. This learned behavior transferred to my own family and has led to a drifting apart between my wife and me. I wish I had found this book years ago because it has practical activities that are designed to correct the lack of intimacy between family members. While years of counseling and books that have been read point out what the problems are, this book takes an active role in correcting the problems by giving step-by-step plans to overcome the lack of communication that is the root of all difficulties in a family. These guides are designed to take months to complete with the expectation that once they are completed, they actually will become a continuing habit of communication and growth.

I thought this book was good for understanding family dynamics. It gives you some good guidelines for identifying what a healthy family looks like. As a wife/mother-to-be, I got a realistic view of family life and what makes it work and not work. Good & Easy read. Not too preachy.

Great book for Parents of children who have CAS

I read this book in one sitting. It was really great to have both perspectives of the child and parent. Some of the book was repetitive, but I really took to heart the message that this mother did all that she could for her children, in fears if she was doing the right thing. Looks like she did everything she could to make her children be successful. I really wish the son/brother had more input to it than one chapter, as he sounds exactly like my son and I would have loved to have heard more from his perspective.

Great book about Childhood Apraxia of Speech!!!

I found out my child has Childhood Apraxia of Speech a few months ago. I've been searching the internet for information and came across this book. I'm so glad we bought it! What a really cool perspective both from a mother with TWO children that have apraxia, and from a girl in college that has apraxia. I can't even begin to tell you how helpful it has been and how much hope it has given me. I've been going through all the stages of grief and this book brought me hope, gave me knowledge, made me cry... it's written in a way that makes me feel like I'm reading the journal of a friend. It's not a technical book (although I did learn a lot about everything!) but it's more about the experience as a whole - from a parents perspective. I'm very impressed. I'm so grateful that this book was written. Thank you!

This book gives me so much hope. I read it in 6 hours and cried a bunch... But came away with hope that one day my soon to be 4 year olds will be able to talk. And that apparently he has pure speech apraxia because that is his only problem. Hope is a wonderful thing to gain!

This is such an important topic at this time, as traditional healthcare delivery is being transformed from what we all knew it to be. With successful change comes discomfort and new challenges. Effective communication is critical to patient safety from all perspectives (i.e. - patient-to-nurse, family-to-nurse, family-to-doctor, nurse-to-nurse, nurse to doctor, and the many other service areas of a hospital that are hand-off points). While new technologies can aid effective communications, they call also produce new risks that have to be considered and mitigated. This text is written from the perspective of those who are on the front lines and deal with these challenges daily...and have worked to overcome them and share their experiences. About the Author
Douglas J. Futuyma is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA. His major research interests include evolution of host specificity in herbivorous insects and of interactions among insects and plants, speciation, and evolution of community structure. Dr. Futuyma received the 1997 Sewall Wright Award of the American Society of Naturalists and the 2012 Joseph Leidy Award of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. He has served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution (1987), the American Society of Naturalists (1994), and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (2007), and was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2006. Dr. Futuyma has served as Editor of Evolution and is currently Editor of the Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics.

Great for upper level undergraduate

This book was well organized and interesting. It seemed to be overly wordy in some sections, but overall pretty good. The author includes a plethora of colorful diagrams, pictures, and graphs to help the reader understand as well as to keep the reader's attention. The only thing I didn't really like was the way the author didn't have a separate section for human evolution. This is usually what students find the most interesting so it is sprinkled throughout the book in an attempt to make the various sections more interesting. I think this is an ok approach but I think human evolution deserves a dedicated section.
