Since the description doesn't really tell you what you get, and since the list on the cover is not comprehensive.... I thought I would list it in my review. This handy little book measures 14x9cm (5.5x3.5 inches) if you include the spiral. Easily fits into any shirt pocket... even if you are not wearing a whitecoat. Sturdy cardstock pages, but still weighs almost nothing.

Buy this and a couple other resources for clerkships, rotations, internship, residency

Maxwells is great in the beginning when you're just learning the ropes and need refreshers on some of the stuff you learned back in 2nd year. It becomes a bit obsolete as the year goes on. That being said, even as a fourth year, I still refer to it occasionally. Other must-haves for rotations include:

1) UCSF Hospitalist Handbook - the info is a bit more practical and step-by-step than Pocket Medicine. You can get the iPhone/Android version for cheaper through AgileMD). Because it gives way more tangible, practical diagnostic and management steps than the Red/Green book, all my residents would be super surprised at how much more "mature" and "relevant" my diagnostic and management plans were in my presentations. They thought I was a genius and further along than most of my classmates...(and I wasn't too keen on letting them know where most of that genius was coming from :)

2) Sanford Guide (microbio) - this is really the best book for any microbio you'll need on the wards. You'll look like you actually paid attention during microbio with this book. The typie is very small ad the paper quality sucks. can be a bit slow to navigate through. You can look stuff up by organism or condition, and it has a spectrum of bacteria sensitive to each antibiotic.

3) Tarascons (pharm) - It is far and away the fastest way to get your hands on dosage, forms available, and pricing data. I can't tell you how much of a superstar you'll look like if you actually are talking about dosing as a medical student. This is not something any med students are familiar with. That alone makes this book worth it. Color tabs have made it easier to navigate through. Some of the older drugs are gone. The tables are awesome.

4) Download medscape for general reference questions here n' there. Personally, I like it more than epocrates...and it's free.

5) Netflix- for call-nights and unwinding when you actually get a day off! True Detective is a phenomenal series.

Read This Before Buying!

After reading all the positive reviews I decided to shine some light on the reality and clinical applications of this guide. If you are a 3rd or 4th-year medical student this guide only highlights very basic information that you most likely already know and won't find relevant. If you fall into this category please refrain from buying this guide as it would not give you an edge in any sense of the word, you are better off spending more money in a complete guide that contains relevant info. However, if you are a PCT, LPN, BSN, MSN or even an NP this guide could very well come in handy. This book is incredibly portable (weighs next to nothing) and fits perfectly into most scrubs and white coat pockets, My bf, who bought the book, thinks it is an excellent purchase for the price. If you are looking to find a guide with more pages and or references you would be hard pressed to get one at this price range, he would urge you to either make your own personalized guide or to save some cash and buy a higher end guide that would better serve its intended purpose.

High quality material, low quality content.

The binding a paper used in this book are very nice and heavy. The illustration on the other hand, leave something to be desired. They are cheap cgi. The chimera is just different pictures of animals hastily slapped together in a program and stuck on the page. Some may like the cgi, but I find it looks like it came out of a bad arcade game from 10 years ago. If you want to learn some things about mythological creatures, you can do this with this book. If you are looking for an illustrated guide to mythology and might be interested in using some of the images in and art project, find it somewhere else.

An excellent reference for creatures of myth, legend, and folklore

I was very excited to receive my copy of An Illustrated Guide to Mythical Creatures... and I was not disappointed. This concise book is full of wonderful images and informative text about creatures from myth, legend, and folklore from all over the world.

The illustrations presented in this book are what really stand out for me. David West has created beautifully detailed 3-D computer generated images. Each page is filled with CG images depicting creatures from myth and legend and the heroes that fought them. The 3-D graphics are put to especially good use in creating the chimera, creatures with body parts from various animals. In addition to the CG images are examples of more traditional art such as classic paintings, wood prints, sculpture, and temple murals depicting creatures of myth throughout history.

The information in this book gives the reader a good base of knowledge for creatures of myth, legend, and folklore. Not only are there several different types of creatures mentioned; but, there are specific examples and the country from where the legend originated. I'll give you one little teaser that I found very interesting: The Hsigo, a winged monkey from Chinese folklore, serves to warn of coming drought. Sound familiar? This legend may have inspired the flying monkeys from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this guide, there are mythical creatures based upon legends from all over the world. Native American, Hebrew, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, Hindu, Japanese, English, South American, Australian, African, and Russian, to name a few.

This is the perfect place to start your adventure in reading myths, legends, and folklore. With the specific legends and regions that they come from listed in the book, readers will refer to this guide again and again as they read other books about these mythical creatures. This a perfect book for kids who are interested in monsters and fantasy. Adults can also appreciate the illustration and information as much as I did.

Best quality: The combination of computer generated images and the historical art from each country.
Worst: I was left wanting more. It would be great to see companion editions. Maybe a guide to each countries myths, legends, and folklore. Now that would be exciting!!

Brilliant! A brilliant piece of a complex whole

Chinese language and culture differ so strongly from American thought and culture that it is impossible to think that a single translation of a classic Chinese text can give the reader the complete experience of having read the text in its original language and context. RL Wing's translation brilliantly shines a light on the ART OF WAR.
I came to Wing's translation after having studied and studied the old public domain English translation with its copius notes and explanations. Wing gives the reader a tremendous insight into THE ART OF WAR, the brevity and compactness of Chinese language expression, the morality and thinking of Sun Tzu, and the different ways that the Eastern mind comprehends war from the Western mind.
If you are a dedicated student of Sun Tzu's ART OF WAR, this translation belongs in your collection. I don't know if it's the best or not, but it's a vital translation. If peace is your highest aim and the resolution of conflict without coming to violence is your highest aspiration, this book displays the wisdom of the great general in terms that clarify meaning for Western readers.

A well-defined interpretation of Sun Tzu's Classic work

Why isn't it called the "Art of War?" Because Wing hits on a point missed by most translations. Sun Tzu's objective in writing the classic book was, as Wing puts it, "The achievement of triumph through tactical positioning, without resorting to battle."
The book is divided as the original. Brief, to the point, and put forth in such a way to invite the reader to contemplate each section, with comments by the author as to how it relates to different levels of conflict...environmental, interpersonal, between leaders, and within ones self. This structure allows the reader to use this book as both discovery and reminder. I've carried the book around for years, using it to remind me how to deal with situations.
I've read several versions of "the Art of War," and value this one the most. It's highly recommended, and very useful, both personally and professionally.

The Official Soft Skills and Leadership Book to Get Students Remarkable Results During Interviews and On the Job!

As a learning expert, author, college professor and CEO of HowtoLearn.com, I've read a lot of books about leadership but none as stellar and results-oriented as this one.

Soft skills such as personal attributes, attitude, work ethic, communication skills that include listening and responding, the ability to delegate, how positive a person is, emotional intelligence and more as outlined in Dr. Green's book will give any student the edge when complimented with the well-known technical and "hard skills" every leader must have.

Whenever I've interviewed anyone, their "hard skills" obviously matter a great deal, but the soft skills end up making the difference between who I hire, and perceive will become a leader in the company and who will not.

Unfortunately, the soft leadership skills don't seem to be taught (even though they have long been recognized as vital) and many employers and educators "assume" young people automatically have these skills. They do not and this is an issue many companies have concerns about. That's why Dr. Green's book is so essential - precisely because it teaches both soft and hard leadership skills and provides the tools to do so.

Young people who develop these skills increase the likelihood for success both in their education, getting a job and in their career. Green’s book is a highly effective resource for young folks seeking to develop these empowering skills. It's practical and one that every student needs to read and apply well before they enter the work force.

As expected, Green discusses communication, professionalism, and teamwork, but he delves deeper. For example, Green discusses how to set goals, and he also gives insight into the reasons many goals are never achieved. He emphasizes lifelong learning and also includes informed advice on prioritization, life balance, handling mistakes, dealing with conflict, and learning from setbacks.

Green’s emphasis on reflection is a distinctive strength that personalizes his advice and facilitates learning. Green not only includes a specific discussion of reflection, but he incorporates reflection throughout the book.

Additionally, Green includes numerous exercises and activities to expedite development and personal application of leadership and soft skills. Finally, Green’s easy-to-read style and inclusion of stories and personal examples makes the book accessible and easy-to-read and use for high school and college students alike.

Overall, this book is a superb resource for young people wanting to develop their leadership and soft skills. It should be required reading for high school and college students as well as anyone who wants (and needs) to develop leadership and soft skills. Don't Let the Title Turn You Off...Your Kids Need to Read This

I am a parent who is crossing the void helping our kids to transition from high school to college now. So I perk up to anything that will help them succeed both academically and professionally in the future.

This book does a great job of. But paradoxically, I have to mention that I was initially turned off by the title. The term "soft skills," is jargon that you would expect an educator who is out of touch with how to connect with teenagers and young adults, to use.

Fortunately, I found the book to be warm, compelling and filled with practical wisdom that has been that the author derive from his own experiences as well as through academic research.

HIGHLIGHTS THAT ARE NOTEWORTHY

There are no quick fixes and no Silicon Valley get-rich-quick stories here. It's all about being aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and "working hard and working smart." There are things that we grown-ups have heard over and over again. But the author conveys it in such a way that the young reader may very well get the point, instead of rejecting it as we often do.

I see in the chapter about communication ways to correct behaviors that I see my own kids make. They need to hear what the author is saying about really understanding clearly the issues of conflicts and how to diffuse them without raising your voice. Actually I could use a bit of that advice myself at times.

And in the end, I still hate the term "soft skills," but whether you use that term or something like ''touchy-feely skills,'' the book does a great job of teaching kids how to make the transition from school to the working world – without sounding the like the whiny, "I'm entitled to this that and the other thing," type of young person that is being cranked out by our educational system these days.

I highly recommend this book to parents to make it required reading for their kids when they are old enough.

A home run!

I've been a college professor for more than 20 years, and have taught and advised many students. This book is written specifically for students and is designed to help individual students improve their soft skills. I wish Dr. Green had written this book 20 years ago! Our college curricula are focused on providing students the information to learn technical skills, but soft skills are often given short shrift. However, success after school often depends as much on soft skills as on technical skills. Soft skills (and accompanying leadership skills) are the focus of this book, and the author "hits it out of the park".

Here's what I like most about the book:
1. It's compact. Many college students I know don't read much, either because they don't have time, they don't enjoy reading, or both. This book is compact and a quick read. It will hold the attention of students.
2. It's well-organized. I've heard it said that an effective speaker will tell the audience what s/he is going to say, say it, then remind the audience what was said. The book is organized in this fashion. It's easy to follow and flows logically.
3. Lots of personal examples that will connect with students. The author mentions mistakes he's made, and how he learned from them.
4. The book is very practical and the author suggests many concrete ways to improve soft skills.
5. It encourages students to be thoughtful and deliberate as they consider and plan for their futures. This is a great message for young people (for all of us really!).

This book should be recommended reading for students from mid high school years all the way through their higher education/professional school years. The message is simple yet profound, memorable, and practical. I will be buying some of these for my student advisees and I know they will benefit. This book is definitely worth buying and reading!
