A Great M/M Romance!
By Andrea T
Imagine a story in which two strangers on vacation meet in a bar. They feel an instant, intense spark, and they act on. That sparks leads to a night of passion neither has ever experienced. But it's for one night only. They each go home, resigned to remember that night, knowing it will never happen again. Until...Monday morning rolls around, and the two realize they are now working together, one as boss and the other as employee. Though they know they shouldn't continue - it's not professionally ethical, they can't resist. It's a story we romance readers are very familiar with, yes?

Now remember that the two lovers are both men. That changes things up a bit. What I loved about Takeover was the author didn't necessarily write a "gay" story, it is a love story. I happen to enjoy m/m romance, but after realizing that what I've read is erotic m/m romance, I felt a bit guilty, like maybe I was only into it for the thrills and not the real heart of the story. If I remember correctly, Takeover is the first m/m romance I've read that is more mainstream, and the fact it read as a romance that happened to contain two male leads was really lovely.

That both main characters are men is just a fact, though it does lend to extra complications, which realistic, though unfortunate. Not only must Michael and Sam contend with a frowned-upon workplace romance, but they must also deal with the ramifications of homophobia. Michael, though not overly chatty about his personal life, is open. He's not had any big complications in the workplace, other than being cheated out of his position in the company by his former, closeted lover and company co-founder. Sam, though, is deeply, deeply closeted. As a CEO, he's seen and heard the slurs from his colleagues, and knows that if he should ever be exposed, the job offers will stop. Sam has also experienced brutality from homophobes, which gives him the extra incentive to keep his sexual preference private. Michael refuses to be with another man who refuses to be open, Sam doesn't see a way to be out, along with safe and employed. It's an extremely complicated, heart-wrenching situation. One I believe the author navigated very well.

Besides the workplace and social aspects of Takeover, it was such a good, sexy love story! Michael and Sam are so perfectly matched in this department. Sam is so wound-up by life and work, and as a man in near-constant power, he seeks a safe place to let go of his power, to submit to pleasure and the pleasure he gets from pain, both of which Michael is only too happy to give. Michael's a dominant lover and caring lover, always knowing exactly how much Sam needs. I've struggled before with reading about D/s relationships. This aspect only applies to the bedroom in this case, and I'm not sure it would even be technically classified as such. It wasn't about control or demands as much as it was about each man's preferences and giving that in a loving, respectful manner. Maybe I'm thinking too hard, but at any rate, I loved it.

By the way, Takeover was HOT. Damn.

Takeover was such a great story. The more I've considered since reading it, the higher I regard this story. Both Michael and Sam were dynamic, compelling characters whose attributes and flaws contributed to creating well-rounded men. I believed in them as a couple, wanted them to find a way to be wholly together. I understood the divide between them and what stood in their way as a couple. I thought how they grew and worked to find a way was believable and romantic. And I loved the ending. Takeover was an excellent standalone romance.

Based on the sample at the back of my eARC, it seems there will be another story in this same world, Just Business. This seems to be more of a companion story, and I'll say that I can't wait for more.

Favorite Quotes

Michael stroked Sam's jaw with his thumb. "If anything I do gets to be too much, say 'yellow' and I'll slow down. Say 'red' and I'll stop. Understand?"
A safeword? Lightning ran through Sam's veins. He couldn't be that lucky. "Yes." Sam leaned into Michael's touch. "And if I want more?"
"You beg for it."

"Sam." Michael whispered into his ear.
"Hmm?"
"Did you find the answer?"
The question startled Sam. He said nothing and Michael didn't pry. He rolled slightly to turn off the lamp on the side table.
In the darkened room, Sam traced the lines of Michael's face in the faint glow from the windows.
Trust. Security. Completion.
This was what came after pain, after pleasure, this was what Michael gave him.
He spoke his answer against Michael's collarbone. "You give me peace."
Michael didn't speak, just held him tighter. Which was exactly perfect.

Loved it!
By Bea LaRocca
I really, really enjoyed Takeover! It was very well written which made it a pleasure to read as well as enabling me to focus on the actual story. The story itself was both honest and realistic and I could easily imagine people that I know in the real world having similar experiences and battling the same personal demons.
Sam and Michael meet in Curacao while they’re both on vacation. The one night stand that they share was supposed to be just that. No strings attached. No last names or numbers exchanged. However, when they return home, the heat of their shared encounter still lingers with them both, in their memories and in their dreams.
The last thing that either of them expects is to see each other again, so when Michael learns that Sam is the new CEO at the company that he’d founded, he couldn’t be more surprised. Sam is no less surprised but determined to maintain a professional decorum despite the attraction that he still feels for Michael.
They spend weeks working together, building both a good working relationship and a close friendship, but their attraction for each other still simmers just beneath the surface. No one knows Sam like Michael does, knows what he wants and what he needs. When they finally give into that attraction again, the consequences are potentially devastating, putting both their budding friendship and their jobs in jeopardy.
If that wasn’t more than enough to deal with, they are each struggling with trust issues because of past experiences, and the choice to make life-altering decisions that could affect both of their futures, whether they’re together or apart.
I loved how these two men gradually overcame their insecurities and learned to communicate openly and honestly with each other. I’m not a fan of BDSM per se nor am I a tech wiz so some of the content of the story was beyond me. However, this in no way detracted from my enjoyment of this story. I am honestly looking forward to seeing these two again in a sequel.

A rating...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
I'll be honest, I went into this book not knowing this author's writing and expecting it to be "okay"...OMG, I was so wrong. This book was phenomenal. Something about the story line and these two men just resonated with me and I really loved their story.

The book begins at the vacation destination of Curacao with Michael who hasn't been able to find anyone to pique his interest the entire time he's been there although he's had plenty of offers. He's pretty much given up on getting laid this vacation when Sam walks through the door in his suit, looking a bit beat down by life. Michael's interest is piqued and they have an incredibly hot night...until Michael has to leave the next day.

He never expects to see Sam again, so it's a shock when Sam is heading up the team taking over the company Michael began and subsequently lost because he slept with the wrong guy. Not a great way to start their working relationship especially since Sam is the new CEO, in charge of Michael. That part of the story line isn't all that new...I happen to love "one-night-stands who come back to haunt the mc's" trope. But this one had so much more to it. The company is a tech company that's been in the middle of corporate political mechanisms for way too long. Michael has been there from the very beginning and is trying to do everything he can to protect the company and his people.

Sam isn't a normal suit...it's not all about the bottom-line for him, like most corporate types. He honestly wants to make the company better which is why he's so good at his job. He also maintains the respect from his peers because of it...and the fact that he's never come out of the closet. He's very aware that if he does so, he can kiss his career that he loves and is good at goodbye. There are deep story lines for both characters and I loved all that backstory and their conflict. There's no winning here...for either of them if their relationship is revealed.

The corporate story line worked for me and I'm totally clueless when it comes to tech or the corporate world, but I loved all the intrigue and political mechanisms and just how the entire story unfolded within those parameters. It was just a good book all the way around.

One note...I know some readers have issues with BDSM and there's nothing in the story description that hints at this, but this book does have some incredibly sexy BDSM scenes in it. I'm talking hot...seriously, these scenes were fantastic and so darn sexy. But if that's a hot button for you, then just be aware.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
