All her belongings – except a mirror and chest of drawers – have been destroyed in transit. Now she finds herself abandoned in the desolate landscape to await being claimed by the much older station owner to whom she has been given as a wife in order to settle her father’s gambling debt. Little could she know that day how her father’s selfishness would reverberate down the generations. Just to survive, Maureen learns to put her needs first and emotions second. She buries children in the harsh environment and masters the landscape and people of her outback home. Until she finds herself cap in hand at her mother’s door after the death of her husband. She places her children in an orphanage while she hunts for another husband. But far from the safe haven promised, her children need to toughen up just as she had in order to survive the abuses perpetrated by the very people charged with their care. It is this very toughness that enables Jenny, youngest daughter of Maureen, to survive the Morialta Children’s Home, an abusive husband and ignore the sexual abuse of her children by their father. But worse was to come as the father’s apprentice, Jenny's middle son, becomes the abuser of his younger siblings and his own children. This is a story of survival against the odds, of family bonds and loyalties in the face of evil and of people struggling to find their own way forward out of desolation. It is the story of how the choices of one generation can impact on the next. It is the story of secrets kept and their power to destroy. All of it witnessed by the mirror.

`Dreams are the saviour of the downtrodden, the oppressed and those whom the future is taken from.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
This story is set in South Australia and spans three generations of one family. It encompasses their struggles and secrets and, ultimately, their survival.
After a prologue set in 2006, the novel opens in 1918 with Maureen, a teenager, who has been given away by her father as a wife to a much older man in order to satisfy a gambling debt. Maureen arrives at a remote railway siding in South Australia to find that all of her belongings - except for a mirror and a chest of drawers - have been destroyed during the journey. The mirror will see Maureen's triumphs and share her pain as she learns, in order to survive, how to suppress her emotion. The mirror will become a silent symbol for Maureen and her family, a repository of events and memories.
`It no longer just showed her image; it now showed her past, her secrets.'
When Maureen's husband dies she and her children return to her mother's. But not for long: the children, including her youngest daughter Jenny, are placed in an orphanage where abuse is rampant and children have no rights. Jenny survives by learning to ignore what she cannot change, and by avoiding the truth of it.
Jenny marries. The cycle of abuse is perpetuated: her husband abuses her, and the children. Eventually, he leaves the family. But it is far too late as one of Jenny's sons, himself abused, has learned to abuse his siblings, and later his children. Jenny's son Tony, one of the abused siblings, becomes the focus of the third generation. The novel ends with the promise of another to follow: I hope that it follows Tony's story further. Of all the individuals in this novel, he was the one about whom I cared the most.
This is presented as a novel based on fact. I can't tell where the facts end and the fiction begins but I can sense the pain in the telling of this story of child abuse which repeats over several generations. If the telling of the story is confronting for the reader, then I hope it proved beneficially cathartic for the writer. It is a triumph, to survive abuse and make a new life, and to break the cycle of abuse.
I had a few problems with the presentation of the novel because the Kindle version I downloaded lacks chapter breaks. While this was a minor irritation to me rather than a major impediment, I read the novel quite quickly and therefore did not lose any sense of continuity. The subject matter may make the novel difficult for some to read but this novel will resonate with those of us who care about the both the fact and the long term consequence of the abuse of children.
Thank you, Mia Vayner, for having the courage to write and publish this novel.
