A wonderful comprehensive guide to computer 2D & 3D

This book is great. I have authored a few 3D engines in my day (Dave's 3D Engine for instance), and this book has been a lifesaver. It is not only a great introductory text on the principles of 2D and 3D graphics (complex and simple), but it is an invaluable reference book. It's chapters have succint coverage of just about every major facet of 3D: transformations, shading, everything. It also has some chapters on some of the more arcane stuff too - which is a great read once you springboard off the introductory stuff. Four stars.

A different kind of image processing book

This book, based on the premise that computer graphics, computer vision, and image processing are merging into a single discipline, is very unique and interesting because it deals with so many different arcane image processing subjects. My main complaint against the book is that there could have been more algorithms and equations shown considering the mathematical nature of all of the subjects mentioned. However, the CD has the executable and source code for many good programs, which somewhat makes up for this. The tremendous amount of information contained in the book makes it a great reference for someone who already understands basic image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics and just wants to pick up more tricks for the purpose of multimedia programming. For example, it is the only book that I know of that deals with the algorithms for morphing images. It is not a book to be read cover to cover- you'll find yourself skipping around quite a bit. The book's table of contents is as follows:

3. Basic realism - lighting polygon objects.

Dr Ainslie’s book provides a long-awaited complete and modern treatment of sonar performance modelling (SPM). In this context, the word "sonar" is used in a broad sense, to mean any deliberate use of underwater sound, including by marine mammals. About the Author

Joyce I. Warnacut has over 30 years of experience in manufacturing firms serving as controller, CFO, and vice president. Warnacut is a graduate of Indiana University with a degree in accounting. She completed the requirements for her license as a certified public accountant in Wisconsin in 1983. Additionally, Warnacut completed the requirements for the APICS (The Association for Operations Management) certificate in production and inventory management in 1990. More recently, Warnacut attained the leadership level of certification in QRM (Quick Response Manufacturing) as awarded by Tempus Institute. Warnacut currently serves as Director of Finance for Germanna Community College in Locust Grove, Virginia.

A Lot of Good Information

This is a well-researched book which I have found helpful in my own research. Madsen has always had great attention to detail. The only criticism I have is that, at times, he seems to be far more critical of the West than of the East which has its own, albeit different, set of civil society problems. Still, a good read with a lot of interesting information.

In Wisdom, Knowledge, and Management, the 2nd volume of the series: Churchman’s Legacy and Related Works, the editors draw contributions from leading systems thinkers inspired by the works of C West Churchman.

The Systems Approach and Its Enemies (C. West Churchman, 1979) is one of Churchman’s most significant works. In this particular writing he displayed two main tendencies, that he was a Skeptic and that he showed Socratic Wisdom. In Wisdom, Knowledge, and Management, the editors seeks to follow up on these two themes and reveal how modern authors interpret Churchman’s ideas, apply them to their own line of thinking and develop their own brand of Systemics.

Several authors re-interpret Churchman’s thinking and several others apply this holistic discourse to practical applications. It is very significant that the authors are a very cosmopolitan group: hailing from Sweden, Australia, Spain, South Korea, Argentina and USA. Interestingly, the contribution from the South Korean author, Yu Jae E, applies conceptual tools from the French contemporary writer, Deleuze. Additionally, Darek M. Eriksson’s chapter applies the epistemology of Jean-Louis Le Moigne.

Finally, we would like to note that one theme of this volume is to relate modern authors, and in particular Churchman, to ideas spawned two thousands years ago among the Ancient Greeks.

This effort should show the reach of Churchman’s intellectual power and demonstrates cross-fertilization across borders and continents. It could not have happened without the Internet.

About the Author

John P. van Gigch is the Series Editor for the Book Series Churchman’s Legacy and Related Works which he was instrumental in getting started. van Gigch knew West Churchman as well as his family personally. Churchman wrote an Introduction for van Gigch’s Applied General System Theory which was published in 1974, with a Second Edition in 1978. van Gigch remained close to West Churchman after the latter retired from the University of California-Berkeley. Right to the end, they celebrated several of West’s birthdays together.

Great book about MIDI and all of its applications.

I teach music technology and recording at several colleges. I was introduced to this book by a colleague at a school I had just started working at. I actually ended up purchasing both the 2nd and 3rd editions, because I didn't realize I needed to teach out of the 3rd edition until after I had purchased the 2nd. So, this review is about my experience with the 3RD edition of the MIDI Manual.
I've found this book to be quite comprehensive. It not only explains MIDI and all of its applications, but it also touches on important DAW-related topics, such as computers and digital audio. I've taught these subjects for many years, but still found great enjoyment out of reading this book in preparation for my new classes. I'd not only recommend it for "MIDI" classes, but also for digital audio students as well.
My only complaint would be that there isn't much information about the history of MIDI. I'd like to see more information about the key players and how MIDI came to be. But, by far, I believe this is probably the best MIDI book on the market. I'd recommend it to students and teachers.

Threatening enough to trigger a book burning

An historical sidelight on this book (which is a must read on the short list of the women's ordination topic):
the book was originally published by a "Catholic" publishing house owned by an order of Catholic monks. When the topic became a no-no for discussion according to the Vatican, the monks destroyed their 1300 remaining copies. The method of destruction however may (deniably, of course) have been a subtle answer to the Vatican clamp down on discussion. The monks burned the books in their furnace system, generating thereby for themselves "light and warmth". Painful as the experience was for author Sister Lavinia Byrne, she also could appreciate the humor.

This is a very good beginning point for those interested in women's ordination in the Catholic Church. Lavinia Byrne's writing is delightfully clear and quite readable. She speaks honestly from her own experience and includes enough theology that the reader can then go and learn more on their own. I myself cannot see what the Vatican found so threatening in it. . .
